A Nokia N95 wins the lottery

If more tech companies were as aggressive as Amosu, we probably wouldn't have nearly as many product launch delays as we do today. The U.K.-based bling meister--which promises to customize pretty much anything in "diamonds, gold or white gold"--has done it again with a diamond encrusted Nokia N95.

And unlike so many "special editions" that number in the tens or even hundreds of thousands, the diamond N95 is limited to just 10 handsets. The specs indicate why: It's made of 18-karat solid gold and festooned with 325 diamonds totaling 3.30 … Read more

Nokia 7500 Prism in pictures

Though it has largely sat out the thin phone mania of recent years, Nokia long ago established a reputation for daring cell phone design. Granted, that bold spirit was sometimes a little too bold, but other times it resulted in a lovely product. Nokia's latest entry in the mobile fashion show is the Nokia 7500 Prism. Undeniably unique and unquestionably striking the 7500 is a powerful phone with a broad range of features. On the other hand, call quality wasn't up to par and the unique keypad wasn't terribly user-friendly. For more on the 7500 Prism, check … Read more

Intel and Nokia partner on WiMax

Intel and Nokia said Wednesday that they're working closely together to get WiMax-enabled devices on the market in 2008 when Sprint Nextel plans to launch parts of its new WiMax network.

The companies announced at the WiMax World Tradeshow in Chicago that they'd work together to ensure interoperability between Intel's WiMax chips and Nokia's laptop devices. Intel will also work with Nokia Siemens Networks to ensure interoperability between Intel's chips and Nokia Siemens' networking gear.

Intel and Nokia are both strong proponents of WiMax, a wireless technology that provides faster speeds than cellular technology, but … Read more

Nokia 6301 offers UMA

In an ideal world, every cell phone would be able to switch seamlessly from cellular to Wi-Fi networks. Unfortunately, that world is a long ways off, but Nokia is trying to get us partway there. Today the company unveiled its new 6301 handset, which is compatible with Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology. UMA allows users to make calls on a normal GSM network and then switch to Wi-Fi for voice and/or data. As Nokia said, it brings both the benefits of a cellular and a landline handset.

Other features include a 2-megapixel camera, voice dialing and commands, a music … Read more

Future Implications: Ethics in technology

As I sat here today, trying to decide what the topic should be for this week's Future Implications piece, I thought of the ever-popular topics of computing, smart phones and even HDTVs. But alas, I came across this list from Ethisphere that lists the World's Most Ethical Companies for 2007.

Upon opening the link and examining the list, I was aghast at what I found: most major tech companies were nowhere to be found. Is this an endemic issue in the technology business? And more importantly, what can be done to fix it?… Read more

New Nokia 6555 strides onto AT&T

Nokia today announced its new Nokia 6555 for AT&T. It may look like a normal flip phone but the 6555 shows that Nokia is spurning the flip phone craze entirely. Though it's fatter than most trim handsets (it can't compete with the Razr's trend-setting profile), its tall, slender shape gives it a soundly sleek and elegant look. Features are plentiful: there's Bluetooth, a 1.3-maepixel camera, a music/video player, 3G compatibility, a host of community applications and Push-to-Talk (PTT) support. Call quality was more than satisfactory, and the display was brilliant. We missed … Read more
