How carriers get away with 'locking' the iPhone

The software locks that wireless operators put on devices, such as the iPhone, may violate state and federal antitrust laws, but there isn't much consumers can do about it.

In this edition of Ask Maggie, I answer a reader's question about whether consumers could sue their carriers to force them to allow people to take their iPhone 4S to any carrier they want, given that this particular phone uses the exact same hardware on every carrier. And I explain why consumers aren't likely able to sue AT&T over its new policy to restrict the Apple … Read more

Samsung issues internal memo over Apple loss, promises victory

Samsung management told the company's employees that it will eventually be vindicated in its fight with Apple.

The company claims in the memo, which was sent to all employees, that it wanted "to negotiate with Apple" rather than head to court, but the iPhone maker balked. Now that it's facing a more than $1 billion payout, Samsung told employees that it's a company that centers on appealing to consumers -- not patent law.

"History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved … Read more

Apple has been hit by a lawsuit from an ex-employee who says he was promised a job for life.

As such, the late Apple co-founder allegedly told Goodrich in 2010 that he would always have a job at Apple, even if his current position were to be eliminated.

Despite that reported promise, Goodrich was fired in December for what Apple referred to as "business reasons," unrelated to his job performance.
