Apple's iPhone audio gaffes

A couple of small--but I think somewhat serious--issues regarding the audio output of the iPhone have been percolating on the Web for the last week or so. The issues involve the iPhone's headphone/headset jack and the phone's ability to output stereo sound via Bluetooth.

Let's start with the headphone jack. In Walt Mossberg and Katherine Boehret's iPhone review for the Wall Street Journal, they state, "The headphone jack, which supports both stereo music and phone calls, is deeply recessed, so you may need an adapter for existing headphones." Why the port would be … Read more

Double dose of Disney electronics

Portable DVD players seem to come in all shapes and sizes these days--and sometimes in pairs. Yes, the Disney dual-screen Mobile DVD player has arrived at our New York offices, along with one of Disney's new Pix Max digital cameras, which sports a "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme.

The idea behind the dual-screen DVD player ($180) is that two backseat riders can watch the same movie at the same time, with neither person having to deal with the perils of off-axis viewing. Both screens feature a 7-inch LCD display that straps onto the back of a headrest; … Read more

Judge tosses out Jack Thompson's lawsuit against Gawker Media

GamePolitics.com is reporting that U.S. District Judge Paul Huck has dismissed anti-video game crusader Jack Thompson's lawsuit against Gawker Media, the publisher of game blog Kotaku. Thompson had claimed that Kotaku and Gawker Media had failed to honor his requests to remove "threatening" comments from several of their blog posts that were critical of his eagerness to blame video games for the tragic Virginia Tech shootings earlier this month.

On Wednesday, Thompson had added the blog-publishing company, which also operates other popular blogs like Gizmodo, Wonkette, and Valleywag, to a list of defendants in a … Read more

Gaming foe Jack Thompson sues Gawker Media

Anti-video game advocate Jack Thompson has sued Gawker Media, the parent company of gaming blog Kotaku, according to GamePolitics. The reason for the suit, which was filed in a federal court in the Southern District of Florida, was a number of reader comments on recent Kotaku posts that Thompson deemed "threatening" and which he claimed Kotaku and Gawker Media declined to remove from the site.

Thompson, a Miami-based attorney, has been a high-profile crusader against video games and their alleged negative influence on children for some time now, but gained new notoriety in the wake of the Virginia … Read more

A computer mod straight out of 24

Forget about those silly bomb-defusing alarm clocks. This is one piece of hardware that would make Jack Bauer proud (real or fake versions alike).

This case mod was designed to "look like the sort of atomic bomb that one sees in spy movies or on TV shows like 24," as described on TechEBlog. The creator is quick to add that he "tried not to base the design on any real or fictional bomb, but simply out of my imagination." That's a relief--we think.

My stinky BlackJack

My Samsung BlackJack stinks. But it's not what you might be thinking. It's not that it's poor quality, but rather it really smells bad. I'm currently testing a BlackJack to include in a coming CNET Prizefight with the RIM BlackBerry 8800. Whoever had the device before me must have been a chain smoker because this thing reeks like an ashtray. I've never seen a cell phone retain stench so acutely. Perhaps the rubberized covering on the back side is to blame? I'm just not sure. But whatever the reason, it smells like a bar … Read more

Nutty '24' fan legally changes name to 'Jack Bauer'

I thought that 24 fandom had gone a little bit too far when I heard about the shot-pounding "Jack Bauer Power Hour" viewing parties at various urban bars, but this one really takes the cake. A "computer expert" in the U.K. has changed his name to Jack Bauer, according to Geeksugar. Apparently his given name, Tim Annan, really wasn't doing it for him.

We here at Crave highly encourage you not to do dumb things like change your name as a tribute to a TV show--even though it took me hours the other day … Read more

All Jack, all the time

No sooner did we post an item about Jack Bauer's watch than we heard from our friends at Uncrate, who pointed out an entire lot of 24 gadgetry that they had diligently assembled.

In addition to the watch, Uncrate identified Jack's phone, weaponry, pocket scope, vest and even his (gasp) messenger bag, as well as other odds and ends. For Crave's purposes, we were most interested to see that he dumped his Treo 650 for a Motorola i880. But there's no word on what kind of roaming plan he has.

(And remember, repeat after us: No Lightsabers.)… Read more

Tell time just like Jack Bauer

Now you too can be as cool as Jack Bauer (though you'll have to lose the Lightsaber first, sorry). The "MTM BlackHawk" that co-stars with him on 24 is available for civilian purchase from U.K.-based Special Ops Watches. So what do you get for $645? Tech Digest says it has an "internal lighting mode" for viewing in the dark and an orange "external lighting mode" that can be seen for more than a mile in times of distress. Yes, it sounds a bit pricey to us as well for what you … Read more

Samsung floats new phone designs at 3GSM

Samsung joined Motorola in making a big splash at the 3GSM in Barcelona. The company introduced a selection of high-end phones that feature new designs and improved interfaces.

The F520 has a unique dual-slider design that performs much like the dual-hinged Samsung SCH-u740. The F520 slides vertically to reveal the number keypad and horizontally to show the QWERTY keyboard. The new Flash-based menu interface utilizes a touch screen along with the normal navigation controls. There's a 3-megapixel camera and all the usual high-end refinements, but with support for the 900/800/1900 GSM bands and the 2100 UMTS band … Read more
