Shazam for iOS adds TV to its list of media it can identify

One of the first apps that showed off the power of early iPhones was Shazam, the app that let you hold up your iPhone to "listen" to music playing and could identify the artist and offer you options to buy that music.

Today, Shazam Entertainment announced a new update with Shazam 5.0 that makes the app even better than before. The company says the app now launches a second faster to let you identify media much more quickly. It also can take as little as 1 second to identify media once you touch the button, and even starts "listening" the second you open the app in case you're trying to identify media in a hurry.… Read more

Samsung is getting into the mobile-ad market

Samsung wants to make it easier and more lucrative for app developers to offer advertising to Samsung mobile phone subscribers.

The company announced Tuesday that it has formed a partnership with OpenX Technologies, a leading provider of digital advertising technologies. Through the partnership Samsung and OpenX will create an exchange that will allow advertisers to purchase mobile ad space directly from mobile developers and Samsung. This closed marketplace should allow advertisers to reach a more targeted audience.

The deal with OpenX is an expansion of Samsung's existing strategy to enable advertising on its products. Earlier this year, Samsung established … Read more

Google charged with 'deceptive' conduct in search ads

An Australian court has taken a bite out of Google's search ads.

The Australia Federal Court earlier today ruled that Google was "misleading and deceptive" when it displayed ads for a company called CarSales in search results related to Honda Australia. Google was displaying the ads between March 2006 and July 2007. The court took issue with CarSales' ads indicating a link between its operation and Honda Australia.

"Google's search engine calls up and displays the response to the user's query. It is Google's technology which creates that which is displayed," the … Read more

Ad-Aware 10: Something completely different

The bottom line: The new owners of Lavasoft have revamped Ad-Aware to the point where it has almost nothing in common with its predecessors besides function. It's a good reboot, but it's not out of the woods yet.

Review: While the name Ad-Aware remains the same as it has for the past 13 years, everything from the user interface to the code powering Ad-Aware 10 is entirely new.

More so than any recent version of Ad-Aware, the suite is usable, lightweight, and worthy of your attention.

Installation The installation is straightforward, although it still does opt you in … Read more

Apple increases developer iAd revenue to 70 percent

Though it's certainly too soon to call iAd a failure, Apple has not been happy with the adoption rate of its advertising platform it has seen thus far. In February, Apple reduced the minimum buy-in for campaigns to $100,000 (down from $1 million at the iAd launch in 2010). It was also rumored at that time that the iAd revenue share percent would jump to 70 percent for developers.

Now, according to a report by AppleInsider, that jump in developer revenue has become a reality.

According to an announcement on Apple's developer center:

We have made the … Read more

Galaxy Note ad called most effective commercial in Q1

Samsung's Galaxy Note promotion is going quite well, at least as far as its advertising is concerned.

A commercial for the device, called "The Best of a Phone and Tablet," was rated the most-effective ad during the first quarter of 2012. The commercial beat out Doritos's "Sling Baby" ad and the M&M's "Just My Shell" to take the top spot.

Ad effectiveness is a subjective measure. In order to give some clarity to the rankings, Ace Metrix asks for viewer reactions to commercials running on U.S. television. The … Read more

Meet the new Ad-Aware, nothing like the old

While the name Ad-Aware remains the same as it has for the past 13 years, everything from the user interface to the code powering Ad-Aware 10 is entirely new.

Ad-Aware Free Antivirus Plus (download), Ad-Aware Personal Security (download), and Ad-Aware Pro Security (download) are substantially new programs. More so than any recent version of Ad-Aware, the suite is usable, lightweight, and worthy of your attention.

That may sound preposterous given how bloated and unwieldy the suite had become, but this is a new animal entirely. Ad-Aware's parent company, Lavasoft, was sold in January 2011 by its Swedish founders to … Read more

Is that an elephant using the Galaxy Note?

This Samsung Galaxy Note advertisement is quite the stunner. Peter the elephant is seen on camera using the large mobile device to draw and play music, as well as flip through photos using his trunk. The smart pachyderm also manages to take a picture together with the pretty model.

At first it looked like the entire clip was made using CGI, but the YouTube video description has links to two other unedited outtakes that prove the ad was made with an honest-to-goodness elephant.

Now, please excuse us while we go try training our pet cobra to play nice with the Note.
