I reviewed the Netgear WNDR3300 wireless router a while ago and complained that it wasn't a true dual-band router, citing that it was only able to offer Draft N performance in one band at a time. Now at CES 2009, Netgear makes up for that with its all new successor called RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router WNDR3700.
Netgear hopes to make the WNDR3700 the ultimate in wireless routers for both home and small business environments. Like all true dual-band wireless routers, such as the D-Link DIR-825 or the Linksys WRT610N, the WNDR3700 features separate Wireless-N access points that … Read more
After a little teasing, we finally have the full review of the Apple 24-inch LED Cinema Display.
The most disappointing thing about the display is that unless you own a MacBook with a Mini DisplayPort connection, you won't be able to use it. That is until third parties release a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter for it.
Since we could only test it on a MacBook, you won't see any performance numbers here, since our DisplayMate-based performance scores are based on a specific configuration. We do try to give as much performance perspective as possible, however.

We got the 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display in Thursday, and well, it looks nice. No idea how it performs yet, as thanks to Apple's commitment to Mini DisplayPort it's currently only compatible with the new MacBooks that include the connection.
We're hoping to get a MacBook in from Apple on Friday, and then we can test away. In the meantime, check out a few shots we took.
Our longest podcast ever! Actually, I'm lying. It's not our longest, but probably our shortest episode. I feel we've packed it full of creamy goodness, though. I'm not really sure what I mean by that, but there's good stuff in here.
First off, we announce the winner of our first ever "Give us a tagline" contest. It wasn't officially called that but we're lazy and unorganized and didn't actually come up with an official name for the contest. For the next contest, we'll make sure the name is appropriately … Read more
It's been about a year since the debut of dual-band routers, those that support both the ever-popularly used 2.4Ghz and the newer, less busy 5Ghz frequencies. This was very exciting news at first, but after having worked with a few of them, I wonder if they are really worth it.
If you turn on a wireless network scan in a neighborhood of a big city (like where we are right now in downtown San Francisco), chances are you'll find multiple existing wireless networks.
Wireless routers are so popular now. Up till about a year ago, they all … Read more
Update: I mistakenly said this tool does two-way sync. PhotoCopy currently only moves photos one direction--from iPhoto to Flickr.
Having recently picked up one of the new MacBooks, I've been spending the last few days getting it up to speed with all my Web services and prior storage backups.
One of the biggest hurdles I'm trying to overcome is being too reliant on software, which is considerably easier with today's cloud services.
Two researchers in Sweden have found multiple flaws in the TCP stack that could lead to massive denial-of-service attacks if exploited. At present there is no workaround and there are no patches available.
The TCP stack defines a set of rules by which a computer can communicate over any network. Robert E. Lee, chief security officer for Outpost24, told CNET News, "the vendors we are in talks with seem to be taking the threat seriously."
The discovery follows a test using a port scanner called UnicornScan, which Lee and senior security researcher Jack Louis created. The tool is … Read more
Hewlett-Packard says it has achieved a mobile-computing milestone by getting the HP EliteBook 6930p to operate continuously for 24 hours on a single battery charge. The laptop used in the test is, however, rather different from those consumers would pick up at the store, at least for now.
The machine's equipped with high-end components including Intel solid-state hard drives (SSDs), a mercury-free LED display, and an optional ultra-capacity battery.
The cream-of-the-crop components played a crucial role in making the 24-hour battery life possible. HP says the Illumi-Lite LED display, by itself, boosts battery run time by up to four … Read more
