TeleNav Traffic brings road updates to Sprint cell phones

Nobody loves staring into a sea of red brake lights while enduring their daily commute, but TeleNav and Sprint are hoping to relieve some of that headache with TeleNav Traffic. A new feature of TeleNav GPS Navigator, a GPS-enabled navigation service for cell phones, TeleNav Traffic alerts you to congestion and accidents with voice and visual prompts on your mobile phone. In addition, customers can get alternate routes by pressing "0" on their phone, and can receive an estimated time of arrival based on real-time traffic conditions. Swanky.

TeleNav Traffic is currently only being offered to Sprint customers … Read more

Moto Q headed for Sprint, but where's the beef?

Today, Sprint announced the addition of the Motorola Q to its lineup, with availability starting later this month through its business channels and online and then everywhere in mid-February. The Sprint-branded Q is dressed in a sexy-cool charcoal-gray casing and supports the carrier's On Demand and NFL Mobile services, but beneath the surface, Sprint really didn't beef up the Windows Mobile smart phone with any worthy upgrades. It won't even work with Sprint TV, which would have been great considering the Q's nice screen. Le sigh. Even more bad news, at Laptop Magazine, they got their … Read more

Toughbooks get tougher to resist with mobile broadband

These days, if you're not rocking some mobile broadband on your laptop, you might as well not even leave the house. The latest notebooks to jump on the EV-DO Rev. A bandwagon (for those speedy 800KBps downloads) are the Panasonic Toughbook W5 and the T5, originally released in September. The provider of choice in this case is Sprint.

Our enthusiasm is only somewhat dampened by the fact that those two models are what Panasonic calls "business-rugged." That means these laptops have a magnesium-alloy case designed to withstand a 1-foot drop, and shock-mounted hard drives rated for a … Read more

The world through a USB port

Eons ago, before free Wi-Fi networks existed (yes, there was once such a time), we experimented with a wireless laptop modem that theoretically worked with our Motorola cell phone. It was a bizarre-looking setup that would have had us clip the handset to our notebook screen if necessary to get a better signal.

Naturally, it was an unmitigated disaster that ended up costing more than the phone itself. And, of course, we never were able to browse the Web even once. So imagine our delight at learning of Novatel's "Ovation" USB modem, which Engadget notes is available … Read more

Sprint's new Sanyo M1 says no to memory cards

Sprint plants a new flag on the planet of mobile music with the launch of the Sanyo M1. Sprint's new multimedia cell phone offers all the usual 3G music and video goodies such as access to Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store, but the biggest news is that it offers a whole gigabyte of internal memory. Sprint says the M1 will be able to store up to 16 hours of music or more than 1,000 2-megapixel photos--wow.

Not only would that make the M1 the "smartest" cell phone we've seen in the U.S. … Read more

Sprint launches first hybrid cell phone

Sprint today formally launched the Motorola ic502, the first dual-mode CDMA/iDEN cell phone. As we told you two weeks ago, the iC502 will operate on Sprint's CDMA network for voice calls, then switch to Nextel's iDEN network for push-to-talk (PTT) conversations. The feature set includes all the normal Nextel offerings including integrated GPS, Direct Talk and Direct Send support, a speakerphone, and compatibility for Java applications. Bluetooth is conspicuously absent, however, and with no camera or EV-DO support, the ic502 promises to be all work and no play. From the Sprint side, the handset will support the … Read more

Sprint Nextel launches Motorola i880

By launching the Motorola i880 today, Sprint Nextel proves that all work and no play make a dull cell phone user. Offering a 2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, and external music controls, the i880 has a bit more pizzazz than previous Nextel models, while still offering the same business-friendly accoutrements customers of the carrier have come to expect. The bulky design also is signature Nextel, while the eggplant-like color adds a bit of style. On the downside, the internal memory is small and music quality is so-so, but overall it's a quality addition to Nextel's lineup. You can … Read more

Motorola weds Sprint and Nextel

In addition to its Razr announcements today, Motorola formally unveiled its first dual-mode iDEN/CDMA handset. The Motorola ic502 will operate on Sprint's CDMA network for voice calls, then switch to Nextel's iDEN network for push-to-talk (PTT) conversations. Other features appear to be slim, but the handset should offer a speakerphone, basic organizer functions, and compatibility for 1xRTT data networks. The design doesn't look too impressive, but it promises the trademark Nextel durability. We don't have pricing and availability at the moment, but we'll report back when we get that info.

Motorola also took the … Read more

The Razr revenge

Dear Motorola,

Congratulations on the phenomenal success of your Razr cell phone. It showed a true spirit of innovation and it sparked a cell phone design revolution that ushered in the thin handset craze. You certainly made the world sit up and notice your company once again. I just have one small request, however. Stop it already! After two years we're up to our ears in Razrs and we need something else. Please?

All right, I didn't write such a letter but I stand by my belief that Motorola has milked its record-breaking thin phone for far too … Read more

Razr jumps on the red bandwagon

Along with the red iPod Nano announced yesterday, Motorola has jumped on the AIDS charity bandwagon with the luscious red Razr, available from Sprint. As with the red iPod, this is part of Bono and Bobby Shriver's recent Red initiative to help combat HIV and AIDS in Africa. This new red Razr will be available in November from Sprint, and you can get it for $304.99 retail or $64.99 with a two-year service agreement.

If you're more of a Slvr fan, however, you might have to move to the U.K. to get the red version … Read more
