NEW YORK--Times Square is one of those places that's always a mad scene all the time. Add in the crazy pre-holiday shopping (did I miss the memo that Black Friday came a week early this year?) and it's even more packed. Then add in the official launch party for a highly anticipated next-generation video game console, and the last few cubic inches of breathing room disappear entirely.
NEW YORK--Let me tell you, it's a very different scene from the PlayStation 3 launch on Thursday night. The official Nintendo Wii launch site, at the Toys 'R' Us store in Times Square (yeah, the one with a fully ride-able Ferris wheel inside) has only had a line in front of it for about 24 hours. When I told a few of the kids in line that I'd covered the PS3 launch and talked to fans who'd waited about 80 hours for Sony's console, one of them rolled his eyes and said, "We're not … Read more
The Nintendo Wii goes on sale on Sunday, November 19. Thanks to the inclusion of the simple--but infectiously fun--Wii Sports game, the Wii is the first console in recent memory that lets you have fun straight out of the box. Still, there are a few key Wii accessories you'll want to pick up to maximize your Wii experience--especially if you're buying it as a gift.
Extra controllers: Like all recent consoles, the Wii ships with just a single controller (well, one two-part controller: one Wiimote, plus one nunchuk). But the real fun of the system is playing … Read more
Many bloggers and posters are agog at the restrictions eBay has placed on the listings for presale Playstation 3 and Wii consoles. The rules, however, have not made a dent in the number of game machines up for sale.
As of Thursday afternoon, there were 3,144 listings for "PS3" and related items, and eBay had listed the Playstation 3 as the "It" item of the day. Listings for the Wii, due out November 19, numbered 2,189 and bids went as high as $2,000 for one console that came with 6 games and "… Read more
In a breathless release Wednesday, Microsoft alerts us to the fact that it will launch a public beta of the much-anticipated Halo 3 next spring on Xbox Live.
The release, which also touts such can't-miss holiday 2006 fare as a "stirring, 60-second Halo 3 teaser ad," is presumably geared towards giving Microsoft some PR during a week that is being dominated by press for its rivals, Sony and Nintendo.
And then there were three.
The Xbox 360 has had the next-gen mantle to itself for a year, but it's about to get some major competition in the form of the Sony PlayStation 3 (November 17) and Nintendo Wii (November 19). We've compared the final shipping versions of the two newcomers with our tried and true 360, and we've posted our hands-on reviews of each.
Note to fanboys of all stripes: before you unleash venomous attacks that question our sanity (whoops--too late!), please keep a few things in mind.
With these reviews, we've focused on … Read more
As Sony and Nintendo launch their newest gaming devices in the United States, the buzz is deafening. Yet the products are difficult to compare: While Playstation 3 is aimed at hard-core gamers as the most powerful console ever released, the Wii is far less expensive and targeted at the masses. Watch our video interviews with gamers and industry insiders who are handicapping the race.
We just got the Nintendo Wii this morning, and so far it's pretty darn cool. After the standard unpacking, photographing (check out our slide show) and note taking, I managed to get some quality sit-down time with the Nintendo Wii.
Setup was surprisingly easy. Stick the Wii on a table, plug in the power, TV, and sensor-bar cords, and stick the sensor bar under (or on top of) your TV. Syncing the Wiimote controller was just a matter of pressing the Sync button on the device and watching the blue LED light up. The setup screen came on, and … Read more
