For now, the HTC Dream is still just a dream

News broke Monday that the FCC has finally given its seal of approval to the HTC Dream handset, which is purported to be the first cell phone to carry Android, Google's open platform for mobile handsets.

It appears that the HTC Dream will feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a "jogball"-type navigation toggle (similar to the trackball on the BlackBerry Pearl). There are even indications that it will support WCDMA 1700, T-Mobile's new 3G band.

Of course, the promise of the Android handset lies in its open platform. Earlier Monday, Google finally announced the first beta version of the Android SDK, … Read more

Daily Debrief: November debut for HTC's Android-platform phone

To be clear, Google is not making any cell phone hardware, but rather, an operating system called Android that will be compatible with a number of manufacturers and carriers. The FCC has just green-lighted handset-maker HTC for a November release of a phone model that they're calling the "Dream."

The idea of this phone has piqued a lot of consumer interest among fans of Google's other products: search, e-mail, docs, you name it. As Krazit explains, don't expect this phone to be a true rival to Apple's iPhone, but rather a midrange, entry-level phone … Read more

Natali Del Conte joins us today for a discussion of whether it's more difficult, these days, to get FIOS installed, get a Netflix disc delivered, or find a decent man in New York. FCC approval suggests November Android debut

It looks like Google's Android software will make its formal debut in November, now that the Federal Communications Commission has given its seal of approval to the HTC Dream handset.

Engadget noticed that HTC's "DREA100" handset has been approved for sale in the U.S. after passing the FCC's wireless tests. T-Mobile is going to be the carrier for the Dream handset, which will apparently have a BlackBerry-like "jog ball" as the primary controller.

After picking through the rest of the documents available on the FCC's Web site, VentureBeat believes that T-Mobile, … Read more

NYT: Google's Android coming soon on HTC handset

Yet another report that Google's Android software is about to make its debut surfaced Friday.

The New York Times echoed a report earlier in the week from TmoNews in suggesting that the first phone to run the Android software will be announced by handset maker HTC on T-Mobile's network next month and could begin shipping in October. It's long been expected that T-Mobile and HTC would be among the first Android partners to actually ship a product, but the timing had been unclear.

Silicon Alley Insider says they've talked to someone who has actually played with … Read more

T-Mobile USA could put the new HTC Android phone on sale for select customers as early as the middle of September, according to the blog TmoNews.

The news comes as other rumors circulate that Android phones could be delayed into 2009. But TmoNews says it has a reliable source that says the Android device made by smartphone manufacturer HTC will go on sale through T-Mobile USA on September 17.

The price tag will be $399 full retail or about $150 for a subsized phone with a two-year contract. The site also said that only existing T-Mobile customers will be able … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 784: Border collies are the real cowboys

In the fine tradition of subject lines that tell you nothing about the show or clue you in to the fact that this is, in fact, a tech show. But sometimes, we also like to talk about cowboys. And dogs. And extra-malicious hackers at Black Hat, Vista security "rendered useless" by same, and the low, low interest in Blu-Ray.

Report: HTC Android handset not coming until 2009

Updated 4:20pm with comment from Google

Another report has surfaced predicting a delay in the introduction of handsets with Google's Android software.

Unlike The Wall Street Journal report from a few weeks ago, which said that Android would be delayed from Google's stated expectations of the second half of 2008 to, um, the second half of 2008, this one is a bit more pointed. Barron's Tech Trader Daily picked up a research note from Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research saying that his "contacts" are saying that HTC's Android handset is being delayed … Read more
