The continuing popularity of its less-expensive but last-generation PowerShot S3 IS and its competitors around the $300 price mark such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 and Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS has likely driven Canon's decision to release a new megazoom option in that price class. The PowerShot SX100 IS, which Canon expects to ship in early October for $299, offers some attractions over the S3 IS, but makes some tradeoffs as well.S3 IS SX100 IS S5 IS Resolution 6 megapixels 8 megapixels 8 megapixels Lens (35mm equivalent) f/2.7-to-f/3.5, 36mm-to-432mm (12X) f/2.8-4.… Read more
Canon is bringing a new lens and a new image processor to its PowerShot A-series of digital cameras. The PowerShot A650 IS and the A720 IS both include 35 to 210mm-equivalent 6x zoom lenses with optical image stabilization and Canon's DIGIC III image processor, an upgrade from last generations' DIGIC II processor that Canon claims offers improved speed and image quality. Both cameras also keep the same manual exposure controls as the models they replace, the PowerShot A630/A640 and A710 IS.
The PowerShot A650 IS joins the PowerShot G9 and SD950 IS as Canon's first 12-megapixel non-SLR … Read more
A big fuel cell from UTC Power was in the news here in Silicon Valley this week when Fujitsu installed it as a backup power source for its local campus. CNET's Michael Kanellos wrote a good story about the event here, and took pictures ("Photos: Fujitsu unveils king-size fuel cell").
Although the fuel cell itself runs on hydrogen, there's no convenient source of pure hydrogen in Silicon Valley, so UTC Power also provided a steam methane reformer that yields hydrogen from natural gas.
One place where pure hydrogen is readily available is NASA's Cape Canaveral … Read more
We know people love their iPods, and they understandably want to protect them. But we're curious how far they really need to go. A few months ago, for instance, we cited a titanium case for the Nano that sold for roughly five times the player itself.
The latest suit of armor isn't quite that extreme, but it's definitely more than we would personally need (which isn't saying much, given our slothful ways). The "Bolblbee Solar" may not sound very tough, but don't be fooled--it's "made for adventurers," as Gizmodo says, … Read more
But in some cases alternatives are already cheap enough to compete with conventional power. In Ireland, for instance, wind power can be supported with minimal subsidies, said Jason Bak, CEO of Finavera Renewables, which specializes in wind-powered utilities and wave power equipment. The wind blows hard on the island and its on the edge of Europe's power … Read more
Cambridge, Mass.--Corporations are mishandling their data center energy consumption to the point that they risk disruptive failures of their technology infrastructure, a panel of experts said on Tuesday.
Panelists, which included speakers from the research firm the Uptime Institute, as well as AMD, Hewlett-Packard, EMC and APC, agreed that the use of electricity in data centers is a problem too few IT professionals are addressing. The panel was assembled by AMD.
"The ever-widening gap between computing performance at the server and chip level is not being matched by energy efficiency," said Bruce Taylor, chief strategist and evangelist … Read more
Mahalo launched a new Firefox extension last week at Gnomedex. It's called "Follow," and once installed, it does just that. It's a mix of a toolbar and sidebar that pulls up related search results from whatever page you're on. It's got a built-in Mahalo search box in an attempt to ween you off your Google and Yahoo search tendencies. It's also got a StumbleUpon-like function to recommend whatever page you're looking at to others with yes, no, and maybe buttons, along with a button to take you to a random Mahalo … Read more
A week after a slew of popular Web sites were knocked offline temporarily by a power outage in San Francisco, the data center for the Web sites has finally disclosed what went wrong.
Basically, backup generators made by a Dutch company called Hitec failed to work, according to an update posted to the Web site of data center 365 Main.
Here's what happened: transformer breakers at a San Francisco Pacific Gas & Electric power station unexpectedly opened, causing a power surge that cut off electricity to a portion of the city. (PG&E does not know why the … Read more
If you tend to zone out and leave your computer on to suck energy needlessly, Local Cooling (download it from CNET Download.com) helps you tell your Windows XP beast when to rest, giving the electric company a break, too. I've been using this free download on two PCs for a couple of weeks. It lets you time automatic snoozes or shutdowns for precise periods of neglect (also see Earth2Tech). Use Vista? The wind power industry made big strides last year, according to a Worldwatch Institute report released late Thursday.
15,200 megawatts of new wind turbines were installed around the world last year, representing a 26 percent jump in global wind power capacity, according to the study.
By year's end, total wind power capacity exceeded 74,200 megawatts, enough to offset 43 million tons of carbon dioxide, the institute said.
Germany, Spain and the United States are currently the world's top wind power producers, putting out 60 percent of the global total, but the report says the alternative energy … Read more
