Nokia's 'Prism' gets new angle: a clamshell

It's been several months since we first saw Nokia's geometrically influenced "Prism" mobile phones, and we're still not sure how we feel about those odd triangular and diamond-shaped buttons. And just to make matters more confounding, the handset maker has come out with a clamshell model that looks even weirder.

Nokia unveils new CDMA models

Nokia has more at CTIA than just its new WiMax N810 Internet tablet. Today the company also unveiled two new CDMA/AWS handsets for North America. The Nokia 1606 and 3606 don't offer action-packed features sets, but with thin profiles and clean lines the flip phones are rather sporty looking. They should be out by the third quarter of this year, but we'll have to wait for pricing and carrier information.

Nokia N810 Internet Tablet WiMax Edition makes official debut

As expected, Nokia officially unveiled the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet WiMax Edition here at CTIA 2008. It's a slightly revamped Nokia N810 that adds, obviously, WiMax support and several other enhancements. For those unfamiliar with WiMax, it is a wireless broadband technology that promises to deliver download speeds of up to 2Mbps to 4Mbps with the potential to even hit up to 10Mbps, so we're talking cable and DSL-like speeds here.

Well, well, what do we have here? Engadget Mobile (via Internet Tablet Talk) caught wind of a WiMax-enabled Nokia N810 Internet Tablet after it was posted on Nokia Europe's Web site. Nokia Siemens speeds up 2.5G cell networks

Wireless equipment maker Nokia Siemens Networks said Thursday that it has new software that will more than double the download speed on networks using 2.5G EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Environment) wireless technology.

This is good news for first generation iPhone users whose phones connect to the mobile Net via AT&T's EDGE network. On average iPhone users report that they can get download speeds of 210 kbps. Mobile applications are turning into big business, and Nokia is looking to launch a few start-ups on their way.

Nokia's developer arm, Forum Nokia, announced the results of its Mobile Rules contest Wednesday night at San Jose City Hall. Nine companies were chosen, representing four application categories, best business plan, and four winners of the best technology innovation.

Doug Morris is supposed to be the music industry's hard-liner.

The chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, Morris yanked music videos off Yahoo and sued MySpace for copyright infringement. Nokia: European handset-sales growth took a hit in '07

In filings with U.S. regulators, Nokia on Thursday estimated that the growth rate for sales of its handsets in Europe had shrunk to 3 percent in 2007 from 16 percent in 2006.

What's more, the company said its growth rates had cooled in the Middle East and Africa (to 19 percent from 68 percent in 2006), North America (to 6 percent from 13 percent), and Latin America (to 10 percent from 15 percent), Reuters notes.
