'Banana phone' isn't one, really

There's a funny thing about LG's new "banana phone." Unless we're mistaken, it doesn't have much in common with its namesake fruit.

For one thing, it's not yellow. In fact, the only color at all (other than white) seems to be a hint of orange. And even though it does have a slightly curved form, we highly doubt that you'd mistake it for a Chiquita if it were hanging around the produce section at Safeway. The LG-SV280 does make good on the other half of its name, however, in that it is … Read more

Verizon officially announces the LG VX8700

Though we've seen the LG VX8700 at the LG booth at CTIA, we weren't allowed official information about all the important carrier details--despite the glaringly obvious "Verizon" logo emblazoned on its front surface. However, Verizon has finally let the cat out of the bag and officially announced that, yes, it will indeed carry the LG VX8700 in its lineup. This means that in addition to all the multimedia goodness already in the handset (a 2.0-megapixel camera, a music player, and a video recorder, just for starters), the VX8700 will also support V Cast video and … Read more

LG VX8700 spotted at CTIA

Even though the LG VX8700 isn't "officially" launched at CTIA, it was still out and proud at the LG booth. The LG rep we talked to even referred to it as the U.S. version of the LG Shine. We've mentioned the LG VX8700 before, but we haven't received any information about its specs until now: features include a 2-megapixel camera, a 262,000-color TFT internal display, a music player, a microSD card slot, a video recorder, a video player, stereo Bluetooth, text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, voice recording, a 1,000-contact address book, … Read more

Alltel announces the LG AX8600

Alltel has just announced the latest addition to its lineup, a sexy music flip phone it has dubbed the LG AX8600. The phone is almost identical to its Verizon counterpart, the LG VX8600, except that the LG AX8600 comes in marine blue, shimmering gold, and apple green. Most of the features remain the same: a 1.3-megapixel camera and camcorder, a microSD card slot, EV-DO support, a music player with MP3 and AAC formats, a customizable equalizer, external music player controls, and stereo Bluetooth. Replacing Verizon's V Cast and V Cast Music is Alltel's own Axcess TV application … Read more

Chocolate spreads to home theater

Chocolate lovers are everywhere, and LG knows it. So the company is taking its popular phone brand and milking it (sorry) for home entertainment products as well on the U.K. market.

The "J10HD Chocolate" is a home theater system with an 80GB hard drive and surround-sound speakers that can play DVDs, CDs and MPEG4 videos, as well as MP3 files. The only feature it shares with its handset cousin is a touchpad similar to one on the Chocolate phone, according to Coolest-Gadgets, but that's not the point. It's more about marketing than any technological ties.… Read more

LG's 'Shine' goes for the gold

LG's phone division appears to be going full-tilt into its metallic age, at least in South Korea. Two new models in its appropriately named "Shine" line have made appearances at the company's Digital Design Center in Seoul, according to Electronista.

The first version is a special gold edition of the slider handset destined for South Korea's CDMA networks. The second is the "Shine Folder," a clamshell alternative to the original that appears to resemble one we cited last month that some speculated was possibly headed for Verizon.

Unfortunately, neither of the models displayed … Read more
