Tiger takes on your cell phone

Sure, Zach Johnson outplayed Tiger Woods and won the U.S. Masters at Augusta yesterday, but Woods was probably just concentrating on the mobile version of his Web site.

The site, wap.tigerwoods.com, launched today and offers golf fanatics free news, weekly Tiger tips, and scores through text messages (standard text rates apply). You'll soon be able to download Tiger-themed photos, wallpaper, and ringtones as well.

I can't see myself shelling out $2.49 for ringtones titled "Let the caddy answer" or "Let it play through," but then again, I'm not really … Read more

Ringtone Roundup: Predicting the future

Each week, Crave tracks the most popular ringtones.

There hasn't been much change in Billboard's ringtone chart since last time. Chris Brown's "Poppin'" is still on top, and Buck Cherry's "Crazy B****" is still in the top three. Afroman's "Because I Got High" moved up three spots to number seven, and Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" dropped to the ninth spot. Other than that, there wasn't much movement in the top-10 chart.

Despite the lack of movement at the top of the chart, I'm going to put … Read more

Dukes of Hazzard ringtone goes platinum

Don't tell Boss Hogg, but Waylon Jennings has gone platinum again. His song "Theme from the Dukes of Hazzard (Good Ol' Boys)," is the first country music ringtone to reach the 1 million mark, according to Country Music Television. Jennings' song went platinum in the "Master Ringtone" category, meaning it uses the original recording as opposed to a synthesized version.

Setting the General Lee aside for a moment, this just shows how far ringtones have come. A few years ago, you were the bell of the ball if you had a mangled version of Beethoven … Read more

Ringtone roundup

Each week, Crave tracks the most popular ringtones.

The Gym Class Heroes continue their surge up the charts as their delightful "Cupid's Chokehold" has broke into the top five of Billboard's ringtone chart. The alternative hip-hoppers saw their song rocket from number 19 to six last week, and it moved up to the fourth-hottest ringtone this week.

Chris Brown's "Poppin'" remains at the top of the list, and is once again followed by Buckcherry's "Crazy B****" and Rascal Flatts' "What Hurts the Most."

Afroman gets high on the charts

Each week, Crave tracks the most popular ringtones.

You may not know who Afroman is, but you're sure to remember his only hit song "Because I Got High." The song, released back in the summer of 2000, is actually a cautionary tale about how marijuana can ruin someone's life. For some reason, I doubt the song cracked Billboard's top-five ringtone chart because of its antidrug message.

Afroman's song was the fourth-hottest ringtone, up two spots from last week. Chris Brown's "Poppin'" still holds the top spot, and is followed again by … Read more

Poppin' to the top

This will be a weekly article tracking the most popular ringtones.

Ah, to be Chris Brown. The 18-year-old has a double-platinum album, was nominated for a Grammy, and has no problems with the ladies. But now, in even more exciting news, his single "Poppin'" is the top ringtone in the United States this week, according to Billboard.

The second hottest ringtone is Buckcherry's "Crazy B****." A catchy tune, yes, but you might run into trouble if you assign it to your girlfriend's number.

Proving that they're not dead yet, the Canadian rock band … Read more

Vringo. Video ringtones. Get it?

Vringo bills itself as a video ringtone service, but don't let that fool you. My theory is that the company uses the term to convince traditional media types--like those at AlwaysOn's conference this week, where I heard about Vringo--that it's a viable business model for mobile marketing. "Ringtone," after all, is an easily-recognized buzzword, and it's pretty well-known that tech-savvy kids are willing to shell out money to pay for ringtones of the hottest Top 40 tracks. (I might not be a kid, but I admit that I did pay for a vintage Super … Read more
