Samsung Galaxy S III vs. HTC One X: Quad-core faceoff

Now that Samsung has announced its Galaxy S III muscle phone, one big question is how its core technology stacks up against that of its main Android rival, the HTC One X. So let's take a look under the hood and see.

The S III packs a 1.4GHz quad-core chip, as the company indicated last week. Samsung obviously believes that kind of horsepower is necessary to drive a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 1,280 x 720 resolution, among other things.

The One X, with a 4.7-inch screen and an identical 1,280 x 720 … Read more

Samsung unveils Galaxy S III phone with quad-core, Android ICS

Samsung today announced the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III at a major press event in London. The quad-core, high-definition, Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone will be Samsung's most advanced Android handset yet, and will challenge the iPhone and the well-received HTC One X Android smartphone in the coming months.

The Galaxy S III will sell in Europe in May, followed by other regions worldwide. An LTE version of the phone is expected to come to the U.S. in summer, a year after the Samsung Galaxy Nexus launched on Verizon.

Many of the phone's rumored features have, in fact, come to pass. The Galaxy S III features Samsung's quad-core Exynos processor, a 4.8-inch HD AMOLED screen, and an 8-megapixel camera. Samsung has also customized a variety of features, including a custom interface it calls TouchWiz, and variations on Google's Ice Cream Sandwich camera apps and voice commands.… Read more

HTC One X hints at iPhone 5 challenges

The HTC One X is living proof that big processors and LTE don't pair up easily in phones. This may offer a lesson in what to expect in the upcoming iPhone.

Qualcomm has cornered the market -- at the moment -- for putting LTE functionality and the processor on one piece of silicon. Thus, we have the HTC One X (and reportedly the Verizon Galaxy s3) coming to Verizon with dual-core and LTE -- not quad-core as some had hoped.

And we may be seeing a pattern: the same phone (e.g., the HTC One X) being announced in EuropeRead more

In today's show, we speculate on Spotify, shop online with cash, and crack open a beer to look mature:

It seems the controversial cyber security bill CISPA (short for Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act) is on shaky ground. The White House threatened to veto the bill, saying it endangers the privacy of Americans and gives Homeland Security too much power.

Samsung announces quad-core chip for Galaxy S phone

Electronics heavyweight Samsung will put quad-core silicon in its next Galaxy smartphone, upping the ante for mobile performance.

The Exynos 4 Quad integrates four processor cores and is built on the company's cutting-edge 32-nanometer manufacturing process. The chip will run at speeds above 1.4GHz, the company said in a statement today.

As a yardstick, the third-generation iPad uses older 45-nanometer Samsung manufacturing tech and its central processing unit is dual-core (though the graphics processing unit is quad-core). And most multi-core smartphones and tablets on the market today are dual-core.

Samsung's new chip -- targeted at both tablets … Read more

Samsung Galaxy S III may be minor update with eye tracking

The Samsung Galaxy S III will be a relatively minor update from the S II, a source in the U.K. telecoms industry has told me, with a speed boost and eye tracking among the upgrades. And it probably won't be called the Galaxy S III.

Rather than go for a complete overhaul, Samsung has apparently opted for an incremental update to the S III. "It'll be like the iPhone 4S was to the 4," says my source, who wished to remain anonymous. He gave no firm word on specs, but said we should look to the HTC One X for what to expect. That has a 1.5GHz quad-core chip with 1GB of RAM and a 4.7-inch screen.
