Code Warrior: Nokia puts bounties on desirable apps

Nokia is on the hunt for Windows Phone apps.

The beleaguered phone maker today launched Code Warrior, a site where Windows Phone users and developers can propose ideas for apps and vote on them. Developers can then battle it out to create the best app for the challenge and earn the bounty that has been put on the app.

"Just because you're a developer, does not mean you are innovative," Chanse Arrington, head of Nokia's developer and content marketing for North America, said at the Mobile Monday Silicon Valley event at the Computer History Museum in … Read more

Nokia offers software update for Lumia 900 glitch

In response to recent data connection problems that Nokia Lumia 900 users reported since the device's launch last week, Nokia has issued a software update sooner than expected.

The software for the AT&T version can be accessed through Zune and Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. The software was expected to be available on April 16, but instead has come out three days prior.

In addition to the upgrade, consumers can swap a faulty Lumia 900 for a newer one at AT&T stores. The manufacturer will continue to offer $100 in credit (an initiative it … Read more

The secret to designing a great smartphone font

What makes a great font for a smartphone? Aside from legibility, is it its simplicity, its brand recognition, or the way it influences people's feelings toward the product? From neutral and casual, to just plain wrong, we sit down with Steve Matteson, typeface designer extraordinaire, to get the lowdown on the typefaces featured in Windows Phone, Android, and iOS devices.

Segoe (UI) for Windows Phone: The beauty in neutrality Before Matteson, current creative director at Monotype Imaging, designed the typefaces featured on Android and Windows Phone devices, he created the aggressive lettering for Microsoft's Xbox (which was aimed … Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 glitch triggers $100 credit

Nokia is taking extreme measures to rectify a glitch found in some Lumia 900 smartphones, offering new and existing customers a $100 credit for their troubles.

Some early Lumia 900 customers found that their phones failed to get a data connection, an issue Nokia confirmed and said it is fixing. As a peace offering, the company is offering this promotion both to appease existing customers and entice potential new ones, with the $100 fully covering the $99.99 handset.

There's a lot riding on the launch of the Lumia 900, which Nokia is banking on heavily as its comeback … Read more

The man behind your phone's fonts

No one outside the font world will recognize Steve Matteson. No one on the street will ever stop him and ask for an autograph, despite the fact that his designs are seen by millions of people around the world.

If you ever used Windows Vista, read off a Barnes & Noble Nook, or played a game on an Xbox, Matteson's work has already reached your eyes. Open a Word document in your computer and pull down the font menu. He is there -- nestled in Andale Mono, Cambria, and Curlz.

But it is his contributions to two mobile phone … Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 vs. HTC Titan II: Which Windows Phone to buy

It was a good day for Microsoft and AT&T yesterday, when the carrier opened its registers for two 4G LTE Windows phones: the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II.

Both have the most recent version of Windows Phone OS, large screens over 4 inches, and 16GB of storage, with 25GB of extra storage online. Yet the Titan II lives up to its name with a hulk of a body, a mega 16-megapixel camera, and -- at least compared with the Lumia 900 -- a price tag to match.… Read more

Nokia Lumia PureView mock shows WP 8, 41MP camera

If the Nokia Lumia 900 is any indication, Nokia's resurgence as a mobile player will hinge on distinctive design.

Take, for instance, the mock-ups that recently surfaced on IT168. Allegedly shots of presentation slides, the phone in question, the Nokia Lumia PureView, combines the 41-megapixel camera (really an advanced 5-megapixel camera) and Carl Zeiss optics of the Nokia 808 PureView Symbian phone that Nokia showed off at MWC, with Windows Phone OS.

I don't know about you, but I rather like the aggressively contoured design, even if it does remind me of SCUBA gear and jogging on the … Read more

Windows Phone Marketplace: Does it have the apps I need?

When it comes to downloading apps, most smartphone users think there are exactly two places to go: the iTunes App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android. But what many of these users might not know (or what they may be choosing to ignore) is that there's actually another shop on the block that is slowly growing its catalog (and I'm not talking about BlackBerry App World).

With over 70,000 apps and games available, and roughly 300 new titles added every day, the Windows Phone Marketplace certainly looks like it's on an upswing, which is … Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 review: My favorite Windows Phone yet

After months and months of waiting for the Microsoft-Nokia partnership to bear smartphone fruit here in the U.S., the Nokia Lumia 900 is finally here! I won't say that I couldn't be happier, because I could, but let's just say that I'm very happy with this phone as a mainstream offering that makes Microsoft's Windows Phone portfolio much more exciting, and AT&T's lineup to boot.

I'd like to direct you to the review instead of spilling all the goods here, because the photos are fantastic, the video will show you what you need to know, and the review goes in-depth to answer some of the questions I think you're going to have about the brightness of the screen compared with other similar phones, the way it feels in the hand, and how fast LTE really is.… Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 camera shoot-out vs. iPhone 4 (photos)

Nokia has hyped the Nokia Lumia 900's 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and you know what that means: it's time for a camera shoot-out. I traipsed around San Francisco with four smartphones with 8-megapixel cameras: the Lumia 900 and the iPhone 4S to see just how well they captured the moment. I took close to 20 comparison shots, but to keep you from going blind, I narrowed it down to the two best phones and the 11 most representative pictures.

I'm no professional photographer, but I did keep a keen eye out for differences in focal range, overall detail, color tone, and contrast. I share my opinion below, but check out the photos for yourself to make up your own mind.

Unless otherwise stated, all photos were taken using automatic settings. I've resized the images, but left them otherwise untouched.… Read more
