New Sprint Treo 750 could be just days away

So, there I was, on the phone with a Sprint rep, chatting about my cell phone bill and the possibility of signing a new, two-year contract, when something funny happened: I got to hear about a couple of rumored new phones that hadn't been officially announced. The rep suggested I apply my $150 signing bonus to the new Treo 750, which was, "just days away."

I have the Sprint PPC 6700, an HTC device, and have been eagerly anticipating its successor, which is supposed to be slimmer and offer better battery life. So, I asked, "Any … Read more

Canada 2, USA 0: Canada also gets HTC P4000

Well, dagummit! Foiled again. The lucky customers of Canadian carrier Telus are getting another cool smart phone for the picking in addition to the HTC Vox/S720: the HTC P4000. It also runs the latest Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition and has integrated Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, EV-DO Rev A support, a 2-megapixel camera, and a 2.8-inch touch screen. We're still awaiting final details on availability and … Read more

Canada 1, USA 0: Canada gets HTC Vox first

Our lucky, lucky neighbors to the north. Today, HTC announced the availability of the CDMA HTC Vox (aka HTC S720) for Canadian carrier, Telus, with a probable summer release for the United States. The GSM version of the Vox was officially unveiled at 3GSM World Congress, and as we noted then, the smart phone features Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition, integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera, 128MB of flash memory, 64MB of RAM, a microSD slot, and a 2.4-inch display. Perhaps the most appealing thing about the Vox, though, is its compact candy bar-style design that hides a … Read more

Don't call it a UMPC: HTC Advantage coming to the States

Frankly, I'm not even sure what to call the HTC Advantage. I mean, this gadget is really in a league of its own. It's not an ultramobile PC per se (and HTC doesn't want to identify the Advantage as a UMPC anyway), and categorizing it as a smart phone would do it injustice. Maybe a smart phone on some serious steroids? While the nomenclature is up for debate, we do know a couple of things: it's tricked out with some sick features and it's actually coming to the States. Yes, we're actually going to … Read more

HTC shifts into Vista

HTC, maker of high-concept phones (excuse us, "Microsoft Windows Mobile-based smart devices"), such as the T-Mobile Dash, is bringing Windows Vista to UMPCs with the HTC Shift, announced this morning at CTIA 2007.

The company describes the device as about the size of, "a couple of DVD cases," and it sports a 7-inch wide-screen display, 30GB hard drive, and every flavor of wireless connectivity you can think of, including, "Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi."

We've already seen Windows Vista in the promising, if not entirely practical, … Read more

HTC Vox unveiled: Where's the 3G?

So, I kind of have a secret to tell you guys. I, um, don't actually own a smart phone. I know, I know. I make a living reviewing these devices, and I don't even own one? But I have my reasons. First, because of my job, I'm lucky enough to have hands-on time with a lot of these devices, and with the recent explosion of smart phones, I can't remember the last time I haven't had one to toodle around with for a while. Also, I'm a big stickler about design. I'm a … Read more

HTC Athena launches in Europe; will it fly in the States?

Good 'ol HTC recently launched another innovative device (in Europe, of course--guh), but it's not a smart phone. The HTC Athena is a UMPC of sorts, and it's jam-packed with features. It is powered by a 624MHz Intel processor, runs Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition, has an 8GB hard drive and 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash ROM. You want wireless options? Oh, it's got your wireless options--Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA, and GPS. On top of all that, the gadget boasts a 5-inch, 640x480 resolution touch screen; a detachable … Read more

Still no plans for U.S. release of HTC Artemis; CNET cries

HTC makes some great smart phones, such as the T-Mobile Dash (a.k.a. HTC Excalibur) and the Cingular 8525, but one smart phone we've anxiously been awaiting is the HTC Artemis. Why? Well, it has this really cool navigation wheel, which they call RollR, that combines a trackwheel and a trackball (á la T-Mobile Sidekick 3) and makes navigating the device so easy. It almost mimics the experience of a mouse, as it it brings up a cursor on the screen, and you simply have to press the trackball to click an app or menu. In addition, the … Read more
