Actually, T-Mobile does several things right. Yet again, America's fourth-largest wireless carrier was ranked No. 1 by J.D. Power and Associates for its customer service. For the fifth consecutive reporting period (I'm not exactly sure what constitutes a "reporting period"), T-Mobile gets the highest rating for positive customer care experiences. It also gets the highest retail sales satisfaction for the fifth consecutive period and the highest business customer service satisfaction for the second period. As for the other carriers: Verizon Wireless places second, AT&T and Alltel tie for third, and Sprint Nextel places … Read more
Demo is trying to green itself and is even considering a green-only event for start-ups in the future. This time, though, there are two companies that hope to use tech to evoke environmental change.
Green Plug makes universal plugs for consumer electronics. Taking a duffel bag full of tangled cords and power adapters and dumping them on the Demo presentation stage, founder and Chief Executive Frank Paniagua declared, "The power model is broken, and we have to fix it." (See CNET's First Look video.)
His solution is Green Plug, a three-port DC hub that will recognize any … Read more
Last week Iomega tipped its hand, perhaps literally, with a new hard drive that was suspiciously flask-like in appearance. Now, only a few days later, we get word of the "NEC Flask," apparently a mobile phone of some kind that is said to be powered by liquid fuel as seen through its tinted but transparent casing.
The handset will also supposedly sport touch-sensitive navigation and possibly a touch screen as well, though Chip Chick says no … Read more
One of the nice things about using a notebook is that if there's a sudden power outage, you won't instantly lose your work. Desktop users aren't so lucky, which is why it's essential to plug everything into a battery backup (aka uninterruptible power supply). If the lights go out, you'll still have a few minutes in which to save your work and power down the machine safely.
Best Buy has a CyberPower battery backup on sale for $29.99. It includes six wide-spaced outlets, all of them surge-protected and three of them powered by the … Read more
Can going back to direct current--favored by Thomas Edison--make data centers more modern and energy-efficient?
Start-up Validus on Monday is scheduled to announce the availability of a DC-based electricity distribution system tailored specifically for data centers.
The company, which raised $10 million in venture funding last December, has an initial Fortune 50 company customer that's looking to reduce energy consumption at its corporate data center, according to CEO Rudy Kraus.
SunPower on Thursday reported a drop on fourth-quarter earnings, but a sharp increase in annual revenues driven by large solar projects.
Net income for the fourth quarter, which ended December 30, 2007, was $4.8 million, or 6 cents per share. That is a 56 percent decline compared to the same period in 2006.
Revenues for the quarter were $224.3 million, over 200 percent higher than the same period a year earlier.
Canon unveiled today three new budget-priced additions to its PowerShot A-series line of point-and-shoot cameras. Two of the models offer basic shooting for $150 or less, while one packs exposure controls and optical stabilization into a sub-$200 package.
The PowerShot A590 IS stands out as the only new A-series PowerShot camera to include optical image stabilization. The 8-megapixel shooter features a 35mm- to 140mm-equivalent, f/2.6-5.5 4x zoom lens that Canon claims can gain up to three stops with its stabilization system. Like previous high-end A-series Canons, the A590 IS supports additional converter lenses to boost the … Read more
Microsoft Office is so jam-packed with features that an entire industry has been created to help people find the ones they need. (An example is Addintools' $30 Classic Menu for Office 2007.) Why would anyone suggest that you add even more functions to Office apps? Because the best free Office add-ins can save you considerable time and trouble, without costing you a red cent. Here are five of my favorite Office helpers.

We're only a few weeks into 2008 and you can tell that it's going to be a great year for music.
