My Palm Pre first-gen fears

I usually follow a simple rule when it comes to consumer electronics: I avoid buying any first-generation products. That doesn't mean I haven't ever done it, but I tend to wait for generation two or three before I plunk down my dough, particularly when it comes to heavily hyped stuff.

As I've written before, I'm a prime candidate to buy the Palm Pre. I'm a Sprint customer who has a contract conveniently expiring in June and I have a phone (the Mogul) that's on its last legs. Ideally, the Pre would cost $50 less and not have a mail-in rebate, but at least Sprint didn't price the thing at a pure $299, as I'm sure it would have preferred to do. Pricing aside, the biggest hurdle I'm facing is the fact that the Palm Pre is a first-gen phone--and platform--and I'm really not a first-gen guy.

By contrast, the iPhone will be on its third generation and its platform is already fairly mature. We'll find out exactly how the new third-generation iPhone specs out at next week's WWDC event, but it's safe to assume that many of the small, nagging kinks that were found in earlier editions of the iPhone will have been ironed out. I don't expect it to be perfect (no phone ever will be, because there's always something better around the corner), but I feel pretty good about getting a lot more iPhone for my $199 than those who purchased the original non-3G model (which was originally $599--with contract!) or even the iPhone 3G.

Sometimes, of course, a brand new product can come along that's so far ahead of the pack that even the introductory version is too tempting to avoid.… Read more

AT&T wants the Palm Pre after Sprint

Speaking at the D Conference in Carlsbad, Calif., AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson spent the better part of Wednesday morning defending AT&T's network and addressing complaints about how the carrier was ill-prepared to handle all the demands of the iPhone. It's an interesting discussion, which you can catch here in CNET News' Ina Fried's report.

However, here's something else of interest. During the discussion with host Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, Stephenson added that he sees AT&T selling the Palm Pre once Sprint's exclusive deal with the smartphone … Read more

Sprint-branded HTC Touch Pro2 spotted

This one slipped through the cracks Tuesday with all the Palm Pre madness, but we're pretty sure more than a few phone fans will still find this news of interest.

A Sprintusers.com reader says the HTC Touch Pro2 will be available from Sprint in mid-June and the HTC Snap will arrive a month later. We're not sure of the reader's source, so as always, take this rumor with a grain of salt.

However, HTC did confirm via Twitter that the Windows Mobile smartphone is North America bound and the above picture looks pretty legit.

The HTC … Read more

Sprint CEO: Expect Palm Pre shortages

Apple iPhone aside, it's pretty safe to say that there hasn't been so much hype and anticipation over an upcoming smartphone as the Palm Pre. The tech community was all abuzz on Tuesday when Sprint and Palm finally announced the pricing and release date, but could there already be rough waters ahead?

Speaking at an investor conference on Tuesday, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse warned of likely Pre shortages:

"We don't intend to advertise it heavily early on because we think we are going to have shortages for a while. We won't be able to keep … Read more

Best Buy Mobile to sell Palm Pre for $199.99 without mail-in rebate

While many were thrilled to finally learn the price and release date of the Palm Pre on Tuesday, some of that excitement was deflated by the fact that Sprint's $199.99 price tag came only after you sent in for a $100 mail-in rebate. Fortunately, Best Buy isn't taking the same approach.

The consumer electronics retailer has announced that it will offer the Palm Pre for $199.99 outright. You will, of course, still have to sign a two-year contract with Sprint, but at least you won't have to deal with the hassle of a mail-in rebate. … Read more

Pricing wars: Palm Pre vs. iPhone 3G

By now, most of you know that Palm and Sprint finally announced that the Palm Pre will be available nationwide on June 6 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract on Sprint's Everything Data plan or Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plan.

The Pre's price was one of the key pieces of information missing when I did a basic comparison of the Pre and iPhone 3G (with OS 3.0) back in March but now that we have it, I thought it'd be a good time to revisit the topic … Read more

Tony Stewart Wins 2009 All Star Race

A couple weeks ago, I dedicated a week to looking at redneck cars and racing. Part of that series included a video of fabulous NASCAR crashes. As it turns out, NASCAR has been in the news a lot lately for numerous reasons, so I decided to dedicate my blog this week to NASCAR.

This first video comes fresh from this past weekend's 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup All Star Race. The race was a "who's who" of modern NASCAR royalty (including Dale Earnhardt, Jr.), but it came down to the final lap with Tony Stewart ultimately getting … Read more
