Apple's new iMac remains the all-purpose all-in-one to beat, but Sony's just-announced Vaio LT19U has three features we've never seen in a PC/monitor combo before. This $2,899 model (an update to last year's Vaio LS1) has a Blu-ray burner, a pull-out sled for adding a second hard drive, and a VESA-standard wall mount input. It also comes … Read more
From Bavaria here's a new, "ruggedized" military-spec notebook PC with a keyboard that converts to a touch-screen, tablet PC in seconds by flipping the display 180 degrees and pressing down.
The magnesium alloy housing (4.85 pounds with battery) is completely sealed making it splash-proof, according to Acturion Datasys. (Even the integrated speaker is waterproof.) Since there are no fans, processor heat is distributed directly to the housing, which doubles as radiator.
Playboy has launched its own social network, aimed at college students and built on Ning, the create-your-own social networking service. The site is called PlayboyU, and from the start it's taking a very early-Facebook approach, including an .edu-only e-mail domain requirement for potential users. For many there's still an allure for a service that's privatized by an educational pedigree the way Facebook used to be. But that's far from the most interesting distinction. This is Playboy we're talking about--but there's no nudity allowed.
The site is advertising the typical offerings made available through … Read more
We all have complaints about the people we love and live with, but typically they don't turn into book deals. But Zoe McCarthy (no relation to this reporter), a 44-year-old British woman who gained cult fame for operating a blog called "My Boyfriend is a Twat," has recently cashed in on her significant other's tics and quirks. McCarthy, according to the U.K.'s Observer, has received about a $10,000 advance from Web-to-print publisher The Friday Project to turn her blog into a book. Not quite a Harry Potter-worthy figure, but nothing to scoff at, … Read more
Some interesting ComScore numbers have just been documented by CNET's sister site ZDNet: social-networking site Bebo, always more of a presence in the U.K. than stateside, has soared ahead of global leader MySpace on its home turf. In the month of July, the ComScore statistics say, Bebo logged 10.7 million unique visitors in the U.K. and MySpace trailed with 10.1.
This marks the first time that ComScore's statistics have shown Bebo ahead of MySpace. And it should be noted that these pertain to unique visitors, not registered users or page views.

The nano-sized heir to the highly-esteemed Toshiba Gigabeat S MP3 player has arrived and we've just posted the full review up on CNET.
As you might suspect from our previous musings on the Gigabeat U, the player is by no means revolutionary. Still, its certainly a classy, rugged, and affordable alternative to an iPod Nano or Creative Zen V Plus. Quench your thirst for gadget pictures by taking a gander at Crave's Gigabeat U slideshow.
A few weeks ago, we told you about Leaflets, an iPhone-friendly portal that presents a series of small Web applications on a single page. It turns out there are many more portals like this out there, and uPhoneHome is one such site. Instead of having to sign up to use the site like you do with Leaflets, uPhoneHome doesn't require a log-in at all. You can go ahead and add all kinds of iPhone-friendly Web apps to this page (everything from Facebook to Meebo), and arrange them by date added, categorically, or even alphabetically. The one downside is that … Read more

For as long as I've been testing HDTVs, there are some major concerns I have always had besides the picture: a useful and well-intentioned remote, an easily navigable menu and how well the picture looks if I put it in different rooms in my home. And while I have some issues with the Panasonic TH-42PX77U's remote, I found that on the other important factors listed above, the HDTV performed exceptionally well.
When the TH-42PX77U was shipped to me in a 322-pound box, I was skeptical of its design. If the company was sending me a 322-pound box, … Read more
