Will MSN 'Glo' with launch of new, different women's site?

AllThingsD

It's more than a little ironic that the new "Glo" Web site--a highly stylized women's lifestyle destination that MSN just debuted after midnight today in partnership with Hollywood's BermanBraun and Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S.--will likely be one of the online media sites that shine best on the new Apple iPad.

Even though it was conceived before the tablet was even announced and currently uses Apple-barred Adobe Flash in its headline rendering (soon to be adjusted), Glo is actually more aimed at upending the notion of what makes a good women-focused Web site.

Webs taps Facebook Connect for log-ins, sharing

A small change to site builder Webs could have a big impact on Facebook's news feed. At least that's what the company is hoping.

Webs (formerly FreeWebs) on Tuesday is rolling out a new way for users to add Facebook Connect log-ins and content sharing to their sites. The site-building and Web-hosting service says it has more than 55 million users, and churns around 300 million page views a month. And by integrating Facebook Connect, the company expects to make those numbers bigger.

Webs has long had a way for users to sign up their own users, however … Read more

Web site searcher

Finding just the right line of text or code in a Web site can be frustrating, especially if the site is large or has many links and pages. Browser-style search tools and basic editors often aren't up to the job, particularly if you're looking for more than one type of file. Inspyder Finder is a Web crawler utility that can search for specific content anywhere on a Web site. It can search CSS and JavaScript files as well as HTML content.

This interesting tool is basically a Web crawler with sophisticated search capabilities, though you might think of … Read more

Graphic grabber

At first the purpose of this program puzzled us. Why would you want to download all of the images on a given Web site? We pondered this for a moment and then it dawned on; although we're sure there are other reasons, the first one that occurred to us starts with a P and ends with a -orn. Whatever your reasons, if you find yourself needing to grab a lot of images off the Web in a hurry, Web Image Collector is exactly what you need.

The program's interface is plain and intuitive, with graphical buttons that represent … Read more

Basic download manager

Sometimes it's enough to download a video or song by itself, but other times we find ourselves with multiple downloads going, which can get confusing and hard to manage. InstantGet is a download manager that helps organize downloads and claims to make them faster. Although we're not sure that the program's claims are accurate, overall, it seems to work well enough.

The program's interface is fairly basic, not differing significantly from that of other download managers we've encountered. It's not the most intuitive program we've ever seen, but with a bit of poking … Read more

PALM DESERT, Calif.--If you thought Apple's App Store was getting crowded, we've got bad news. It's about to get worse.

In fact, building them takes place right in your Web browser.

Are these apps capable of building mind-blowing games, or complex business apps? No. For both companies, the expectation seems to … Read more

Syndication siphon

We have to preface this review by saying that RSS Content Generator Premier exists in what we consider to be an ethical gray area. We believe that if you want to improve your Web site's search engine ranking or increase its traffic, the way to do this is to provide high-quality, original content. But if you're too lazy and uncreative to do this, you can use a program like RSS Content Generator Premier to steal content from other Web sites instead.

OK, so maybe it's not technically stealing. RSS feeds exist, after all, for the purpose of … Read more

Google phasing out support for IE6

Google has clearly had enough with Internet Explorer 6.

As of March 1, Google will no longer support IE6 on its Google Docs and Google Sites services, it announced Friday. IE users will have to upgrade to at least version 7 if they want to use those products, as "many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers," the company said in a blog post.

A flaw in IE6 was exploited in the recent cyberattacks against Google and other U.S. … Read more
