Judge: Samsung gets to view Apple-HTC settlement details

Samsung will be privy to some details of a confidential settlement agreement between Apple and HTC, a California judge ruled today.

Samsung's lawyers were given the go-ahead to view confidential details of the agreement that made peace between Apple and HTC earlier this month, following an impromptu hearing ordered by Magistrate Judge Singh Grewal this morning.

That deal, announced November 10, put an end to all litigation between the two companies. Many expect the same thing to eventually happen between Apple and Samsung, but recent comments made by officials of the South Korean technology giant suggest even talks about a deal are out of the question. … Read more

Samsung exec puts Apple on notice: No phone without our patents

A jury in Northern California would say otherwise, but Samsung's mobile chief offered a pointed reminder to Apple that the patent dispute between the two companies is far from over.

"The truth never lies. Without Samsung-owned wireless patents, it's impossible for the Cupertino-based Apple to produce its handsets,'' Samsung's head of mobile and IT, Shin Jong-kyun, told reporters in Seoul, according to a report in the Korea Times. "As you know, Samsung is very strong in terms of portfolios of wireless patents."

Jong-kyun's comments came as the U.S. International Trade Commission earlier … Read more

Samsung to ship more than 60M smartphones in Q4, says analyst

Samsung should enjoy a profitable quarter if one analyst's smartphone projections are on the money.

The company is expected to ship 61.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, said UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois, as reported by the Yonhap News agency. That number would prove a 5 percent gain over the 58 million estimated shipments for the third quarter.

And the figure could grow as high as 63 million, the analyst forecast, depending on how many units are actually sold to consumers. The gain in shipments will be triggered in large part by the Galaxy Note 2, which Samsung … Read more

Prizefight: Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs. LG Intuition

It's a first-time Prizefight for a whole new evolving category between Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 and LG's Intuition.

The Galaxy Note 2 has learned its lessons and it brings a versatile stylus, albeit with a much steeper learning curve. The LG Intuition stylus interface is straightforward and simple, but there's no place to hold the stylus on … Read more

Unlocked Galaxy S3 Mini arrives at Amazon

The Galaxy S3 Mini may not find a home with any specific U.S. wireless provider, but that doesn't mean you can't get it if you really try.

The Galaxy S3 Mini has been quietly listed on Amazon, albeit in a very limited quantity. TechCrunch was the first to notice the listing.

As with other unlocked phones, it's not cheap. But priced at $409.95, it's actually quite a deal considering it is offered without contract and supports either T-Mobile USA or AT&T. As a reminder, the Galaxy S3 Mini runs Android 4.1 Jelly BeanRead more

HTC CEO slams Apple settlement estimates, calls them outrageous

HTC Chief Executive Peter Chou said today that he was happy with the settlement reached with Apple, and called the estimates floating around "outrageous."

Earlier this month, Apple and HTC struck a 10-year cross-licensing agreement, putting to bed a long-running and bitter legal battle. While the companies didn't disclose the terms of the deal, analysts had surmised that HTC was on the losing end, and would pay upwards of $6 to $8 per Android phone.

Chou, speaking to reporters, including Reuters, at a product event in Japan, slammed the estimates as inaccurate and "baseless," but … Read more

How to buy a cell phone as a gift

Cell phones can make fantastic holiday gifts, but purchasing one for someone other than yourself is more complicated than shopping for other gadgets. Unlike a laptop or a shiny new camera, a cell phone requires a service plan to use any voice or data features (otherwise you wind up with a very expensive paperweight). In most cases, you won't even be able to leave the store or complete your online order until you get that angle set up. And beyond just being an additional expense, that service may require a long-term commitment.

There's no reason to stress, though, … Read more

ITC to give its pro-Apple decision a second look for Samsung

Samsung's getting a second chance against Apple in at least one legal venue.

The U.S. International Trade Commission today said it will review a decision made by one of its administrative law judges, who in September sided with Apple in a patent infringement complaint filed against it by the South Korean technology giant last year.

In a filing (PDF) this afternoon (via Bloomberg), the ITC said it plans to review that September ruling "in its entirety."

To be sure, the change is not a reversal but procedural in nature. Following any initial determination, rulings need to … Read more

Demented Samsung ad offers harsh lessons on 'puppy love'

Let's face it, puppies can be a nuisance. They look up at you with their needy little faces and they're just another mouth to feed, another ego to tolerate.

Sometimes, they just have to go.

Samsung has decided to investigate this age-old notion and attach it to the way humans neglect their laptops.

Laptops, you see, have feelings too. They don't want to be mistreated. They want to be fed only the best. But the best costs money.

Better to shoot it with a bow and arrow, smash it with your stiletto, or grab it and toss … Read more

Samsung launches Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE model

Samsung has released the LTE edition of its Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, but the model is available only in Korea for now.

Sold through three different Korean wireless carriers, the new tablet also offers VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which allows standard voice calls to be transmitted over the LTE data network.

Hit by lackluster sales for its Tab tablet lineup, Samsung has been promoting the new Note devices. The introduction of LTE brings the Note up to the level of the 4G Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Sporting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the LTE Galaxy Note 10.1 kicks … Read more
