Apple and Samsung are running away with the smartphone market, but does that mean that consumers should steer clear of all the other handset makers?

In this edition of Ask Maggie, I help one reader decide if he should take a gamble and ditch Apple for an HTC One X. Will he still get the same level of service he has had with Apple?

I also explain to another reader that the Wi-Fi hotspot feature is included in the price of the new family share plans.

HTC working on phablet of its own, rumors suggest

HTC is ready to take on the Samsung Galaxy Note with a phone/tablet hybrid device of its own, according to recent reports.

Whereas DigiTimes is not always the most reputable of sources, this new report matches up nicely with other rumors. Benchmarks for an HTC 6435LVW were recently … Read more

HTC's tagline is quietly brilliant. The smartphone maker's second quarter results and third quarter outlook indicate that the company may become quietly irrelevant.

The Taiwanese company's second quarter results (CNET, Techmeme) missed estimates with a net profit of NT$7.4 billion on revenue of $91.04 billion. (That's But the outlook for the third quarter was more worrisome. HTC projected third quarter revenue of NT$70 billion to $NT80 billion.

Why it's not doom and gloom for HTC yet

It's a little too soon to write off HTC.

With Apple and Samsung Electronics cornering more than two-thirds of the industry's sales and nearly all of its profits, it's easy to dismiss every other handset manufacturer. That includes HTC, whose descent from industry darling to embattled company seemingly happened overnight.

The rapid reversal of fortunes have many skeptical about HTC's ability to make a comeback. But there's still a lot to like about the company. It remains profitable, even if those profits are in decline; it still has a recognizable brand and loyal base of … Read more

HTC One X will drop to $99 July 29

Radio Shack announced today it is cutting the price of AT&T's HTC One X in half to just $99.99 this Sunday, July 29. And as of this afternoon, AT&T has matched that price online.

This new price matches up with similar reports hitting the Internet in the early morning hours. Considering the high-end Android smartphone is only a few months old, the $100 price drop is quite noteworthy. Chances are good that the deep discount comes as a rebuttal to the Samsung Galaxy S3, which is now on sale for as low as $149.

Looking across the smartphone landscape, I'm seeing a trend in high-end models getting closer to the $100 price point.… Read more
