When using your Mac, maintaining a small amount of free drive space is required to keep your system running optimally. While nothing stops you from adding files to your drive until it can hold no more, once you start encroaching on the last ~10GB-20GB of space, the system will not be able to manage its virtual memory footprint as easily, resulting in slower performance. Additionally, even though OS X manages file fragmentation for conventional hard drives well by keeping 20MB chunks of data in contiguous blocks, this feature requires free space to work, and may suffer if you are limited … Read more
"Hey, I'm in the car."
For some these words said on the phone -- or written in a text -- signal that communication isn't a good thing at that moment.
For others, it's just another line in the natural flow of needing to know where people are, but carrying on as normal.
Now, lawyers in New Jersey are trying to explore whether calling or texting someone who you know is driving makes you legally liable in the event of an accident.
Following Google's lead, Microsoft has added optical character recognition (OCR) to images stored on its SkyDrive cloud storage service.
"With this new SkyDrive release, our OCR tool will automatically run on your camera roll photos so you can instantly see the extracted text whenever you view your photos on SkyDrive.com," Microsoft said in a blog post on Wednesday.
The feature can be useful, especially when people use camera phones to take photos of signs, maps, business cards, or other textual subjects they might want to refer to later. (Windows Phone devices can be set so photos … Read more
Microsoft is adding more storage for its Office 365 and SharePoint customers to use with SkyDrive Pro.

Microsoft announced updates to its SkyDrive Pro capabilities on Tuesday via a new post to the Office 365 technology blog. The changes:Each user now gets 25 GB of SkyDrive Pro storage space (up from 7 GB). This is for both new and … Read more
If you purchase an external drive for your Mac, you might be doing so to free up space on your boot drive, or to provide a central and unrestricted area for all user accounts to access. While this is a common and often recommended practice, if you simply purchase an external drive, plug it in, and start using it, you might be overlooking a detail that could result in slower performance or even data loss.
When you purchase an external hard drive to use with your Mac, it is likely going to be formatted with a FAT32 file system. Since … Read more
It seems 2020 is shaping up to be the magic year for self-driving cars.
Nissan announced Tuesday that it'll have "multiple, commercially-viable Autonomous Drive vehicles by 2020," a deadline that General Motors and automotive supplier Continental also have set. Google, however, has set more ambitious goals for its autonomous-vehicle program: Google co-founder Sergey Brin predicted the arrival of self-driving cars for the general public by 2017.
The next-gen Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game consoles are both coming in November. In the meantime, current-generation Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles are more affordable than ever -- both available for the very reasonable sum of $199. But are these entry-level models so stripped-down that they're a bad investment? Or are they a budget gamer's dream?
The dilemma It's hard to imagine that anyone interested in buying an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 doesn't already own one (it's been a half-dozen years, people). That said, there's still a lot of fun to … Read more
Some ads, like some movies, can be so bad that they become a peculiar sort of good.
Then there are ads that maintain a deep worthlessness and cause only pain to the senses.
You must decide how you feel about this opus, created by Samsung.
Released a couple of weeks ago, it sat in the Internet's ether, hiding in plain sight. Then the critics at Reddit got hold of it and mused whether the world had ended early.
The ad, for Samsung's 840 EVO Series Solid State Drive, seems to have enjoyed a very strict casting brief: please … Read more
Continental, a major automotive supplier in Germany, expects its technology research will yield self-driving cars by 2020.
The company has invested more than $130 million on self-driving car research so far, said spokesman Vincent Charles. It began participating in DARPA self-driving car challenges in 2007, is licensed to test autonomous vehicles in Nevada, and has 1,300 researchers working on technology to assist drivers and eventually take over altogether.
"We're quite engaged and have a clear road map," Charles said Friday. On that schedule: partially automated cars by 2016 and highly automated cars for consumers by 2020, … Read more
