Radio Shack: Free gun with your Dish Network

Updated 10.40 p.m. PT with comment from Direct TV

Culture is a strange thing. Elements that appear normal in one culture--say, drinking a beer on the street when you're as old as 20--are reviled in another.

So one has to accept that pockets of humanity see the world in their own way.

However, a promotion by Radio Shack in Hamilton, Mont., might move one or two people to move there just to benefit from its full-bore imaginative core.

For the Ravalli Republic reports that the Radio Shack Super Store in Hamilton has a very fine sign of … Read more

Hands-on: Dish Remote Access app for iPhone/iPad

Dish Network has offered a free iPhone app called Remote Access that allowed you to program your Dish receiver to record shows remotely. However, owners of Dish's new SlingLoaded DVR, the ViP 922, as well as the new Sling adapter for the ViP 722 or 722k, were waiting for the app to let you stream live programming to your iPhone or iPad. Well, that day is here.

We tried the updated app and it worked as advertised, and we liked the interface on the iPad. The video quality wasn't great and the sound had some hiccups now and … Read more

Dish Network subscribers can now watch content from their DVRs in full screen on Apple's iPad.

The satellite provider said today that its Remote Access app is available for free to iPad users in Apple's App Store. The app lets people watch live TV and DVR recordings, as well as manage their DVR. However, in order to get it to work, Remote Access users need much more than just the app.

First off, subscribers will need a Dish … Read more

Speed up air-drying dishes

Doing the dishes should be its own reward. After cleaning a sink full of dirty dishes, a whole rack filled with fresh plates waiting to be used again should be enough to satisfy any home cook. But it's not. They have to dry. Of course, one could use a towel to simply speed up the process, but there is another way.

The Bon Home Heat And Dry Dish Rack ($99.95) makes dishes available to use again at the flick of a switch. Disguised as an ordinary dish rack, this particular model hides a convenient fan underneath. Air is … Read more

According to a New York Times report, Dish Network customers will be able to watch several shows on DishOnline.com from all the major networks. Customers can also watch content from cable networks, including MTV, Comedy Central, and The History Channel, to name a few.

Dish Online has been available in public beta for a while. But starting on Tuesday, the "beta" tag will be removed, and customers can watch content.

It won't all be free content, though. According to the Times … Read more

Telcos and satellite get closer to local TV sports

Cable companies' fight to keep local sports broadcasts out of the hands of some competitors is heating up as satellite and phone companies pressure regulators to take action.

On Friday, satellite TV provider Dish Network said it would file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission against Comcast for withholding the rights to broadcast regional sports in Philadelphia. Comcast's SportsNet channel owns the rights to broadcast live games for Philadelphia's major sports teams, including the Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Eagles.

Dish Network has been in talks with Comcast over the past several weeks to hammer out a deal. … Read more

DTVPal DVR is dead, but the identical Channel Master CM-7000PAL lives on

One of the perennial questions we get at CNET is this: "I get my TV via an over-the-air antenna. Is there a noncable, nonsatellite DVR I can buy that doesn't require a service fee?" The answers were few and far between. TiVo works great with over-the-air TV, but that unit does require a monthly/yearly/lifetime fee. You can set up a Windows Media Center PC (with a DTV tuner attachment), but that's a rather elaborate solution for most folks. DVD recorders are one possibility, but they generally don't have onscreen program guides, and they … Read more
