Preview is an excellent utility for viewing and making small edits and adjustments to pictures and PDF documents. While for the most part the program is used for its basic viewing features, some of the ways it handles PDF documents can be quite useful. One of these is the ability to easily add links to PDF pages, which can be used to create clickable indexes and tables of contents.… Read more
YouTube's fledgling movie rental program will soon be taking an interesting twist: some content owners will soon be able to use a "self service" tool to charge for access to their videos, product manager Hunter Walk said this week in an interview with MediaPost.
Few details are currently available--none about revenue sharing, none regarding what kind of flexibility content owners will have over pricing, and no final timetable--but it's an interesting move on behalf of YouTube parent company Google, as it competes with Apple and Netflix for the growing online-video rental market.

Chrysanth Download Manager is a simple tool that lets you manage your downloads and their respective updates simultaneously. The program doesn't offer much in terms of help; but, thankfully, it's pretty easy to navigate on its own.
The program's user interface is fairly intuitive. A menu bar resides at the top of the window, and large shortcut commands sit below it. A sidebar on the left side lets you view programs in the process of downloading, as well as any completed downloads. We quickly jumped into program and clicked the New button. A window appeared that let … Read more
It might not seem like much, but a Monday announcement from Facebook to unveil its new "Community Pages" feature is one of the boldest steps that the social-networking site has taken toward, well, consuming your life.
"Community Pages" take the concept of a Facebook "fan page" and apply them to concepts, places, and ideas, rather than brands. An announcement at the top of Facebook's prototype community page for "cooking" explains that it aims to be "the best collection of shared knowledge on this topic," and sources quite a bit … Read more

It appears the day when we we'll be paying to read general interest news stories on the Web is coming sooner rather than later--perhaps as early as June for readers of the U.K.-based Times publications.
News International, the British division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., announced on Friday that two of its newspapers, The Times and The Sunday Times of London, are set to begin charging readers using its sites in June.
It's 2010. The Internet is pervasive and mobile. Business processes, supply chains, and financial markets are globally connected and electronically executed. There are no flying cars, but in many other ways, the future has arrived. Yet when we look at the tools and processes organizations use to create and update documents--the lifeblood for business processes--they're straight out of the 1990s playbook. The world's changed, but the office applications most in use today--our word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation programs--basically have the same priorities and follow the same strategies they did two decades ago.
Sure, today's office apps … Read more
Google is giving its customers more chances to reach their audience, which means you won't be seeing things if you're wondering why that same ad keeps appearing.
"Remarketing" is what Google is calling it, the new ability for Google advertisers to target customers who have visited their Web page with ads for their goods and services on other Web pages across the Google Content Network, which Google claims reaches 80 percent of the world's Internet users. Google provided the example of a basketball team who could show ads for discount tickets to Web surfers on … Read more
Two weeks after the release of the My Passport AV, an external hard drive designed specifically for use with digital content players and recorders, Western Digital announced the internal version of the same hard drive, the 2.5-inch SATA WD AV-25.
The company claims the new AV-25 hard drive differs from other internal hard drive by providing greater reliability, with a mean time between failures of 1 million hours. It's engineered specifically for demanding, always-on multimedia-streaming applications, and runs cool and quiet.
Apart from that, WD says the AV-25 hard drive meets the requirements of the AV/DVR and surveillance markets by offering universal compatibility, low power consumption, and the capability to simultaneously record multiple audio and/or high-definition video streams.
Other features of the new AV-25 hard drive include:… Read more
Late last week, Apple notified developer Chillifresh that its Wobble iBoobs application was being removed from the App Store due to its "overtly sexual" nature. Since then, it appears that Apple has gone on a rampage of sex-oriented app removals.
Chillifresh claimed in a Saturday post that a discussion with Apple revealed that more than 5,000 apps have been affected by its new App Store content policy. Apple said the change was triggered by numerous customer complaints, according to Chillifresh.
"Whenever we receive customer complaints about objectionable content, we review them," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller … Read more
