Home cloud: Hands-on with the new Pogoplug Series 4

Sick of living in the cloud?

The new Pogoplug Series 4 is a device that looks to take the best of cloud computing and home network-attached storage and combine the two into a seamless experience. Available today, it certainly seems like a perfectly timed idea in the wake of seemingly daily frustrations with services like Apple's own iCloud and iTunes Match.

Maybe the fourth time's a charm: I've reviewed multiple Pogoplugs before, but none of them came close to what this new version offers. The Pogoplug is a NAS drive without the complications, and it's finally hit a sweet spot for price, size, and feature set. The newly released Pogoplug Series 4 is a latecomer to the holiday shopping season, but if you're getting fed up with iCloud and what other cloud services have to offer, then this $99 device might be what you're looking for.… Read more

Why aren't people buying Honeycomb tablets?

As we near the one-year anniversary of Honeycomb tablets, you might assume that Android 3.0 has led to a proliferation of devices and sales.

After all, considering it was written specifically with large displays in mind, it was sure to revolutionize the tablet industry, right?

Well, not exactly. According to new data from ad network Chitika, Honeycomb only accounts for 1 percent of the Android usage on their system.

Based on data collected from hundreds of millions of ads served over the span of a week, Chitika found that Gingerbread and Froyo still command approximately 95 percent of the … Read more

List surfaces of Intel chips destined for ultrabooks, MacBooks

Don't run out and buy that new ultrabook or MacBook yet. Not until you look at the deets on Next-gen Intel mobile processors, which were just leaked.

Dubbed Ivy Bridge, these chips are due in the April-May time frame and pack Intel's first 3D transistors built on its world-leading 22-nanometer process technology.

By, let's say, the end of 2012 virtually all new MacBooks and ultrabooks will house Ivy Bridge processors. Not to mention the larger Windows (by then, let's hope that's Windows 8) mainstream and gaming laptop varieties.

A couple of model numbers of interest … Read more

Intel 'Ivy Bridge' chip lineup outed--report

Here's what CPU World says about the new chips due to be announced in the CES 2012 timeframe: "The third generation Core i7 processors will integrate 4 CPU cores, 8 MB L3 cache and … Read more

Study the Bible with Prophecy Expert

Prophecy Expert is an interesting concept; it's a free Bible study program with a desktop interface that imports Web-based content, including many commentaries and references as well as social networking and other interactive features. It's provided by Minister Fortson, aka Dante Fortson, whose Web site claims to offer "a Christian perspective on angels, aliens, demons, giants, nephilim, and other supernatural phenomena." Say what you will (and who doesn't?) the Minister correctly points out that many Bible study programs are expensive rip-offs that charge for access to free Web-based resources. Prophecy Expert certainly enables users to … Read more

Don't waste your time with Facebook Pro

If there's one thing we hate, it's software that doesn't do anything that you can't already do with existing programs on your computer. Why clutter up your hard drive with software you don't need? Unfortunately, Facebook Pro is exactly that: software you don't need. The program is essentially just a Web browser that displays Facebook and a couple of other links. We didn't see the point, and we doubt you will, either.

We installed Facebook Pro and it took us to the Facebook log-in page. We logged into our Facebook account and yes, … Read more

Adjust your display with Gamma Control 3

In digital images, gamma correction or encoding refers to luminance; adjusting it can make video or still pictures seem brighter or darker. Gamma Control is a simple piece of freeware for quickly adjusting your display's gamma without changing your graphics settings. It's great for gaming or watching movies online because it illuminates dark corners and reveals detail, any time you need to brighten (or darken) your display temporarily. We looked at Gamma Control 3, which is ad-supported and includes a feed. Unfortunately, the feed didn't work for us, and the updated version proved a bit buggy.

Apple prepping Air-like 15-inch MacBook, report says

Apple is readying a MacBook that would extend the ultrathin Air design beyond the 13-inch market segment, according to reports.

Japanese-language site Macotakara says a new 15-inch model has entered the test phase.

It's not clear at this point whether this will be an addition to the MacBook Air series--currently offered in 11- and 13-inch sizes--or a new MacBook Pro.

One tech site claimed back in July that a 15-inch model would be part of the MacBook Pro line. Macrumors, which also supports the MacBook Pro theory, had originally reported about an ultrathin MacBook back in July. … Read more
