Electronics deal finder

Comparison shopping for electronics is one of the Web's most popular pastimes. Dynamite Data's Dynamite Deals for Firefox is a free add-on that automatically searches for the best deal in electronics and other merchandise from several of the Web's largest retailers, including Newegg, Buy.com, and NextWarehouse, displaying comparison prices in a small pop-up window.

Dynamite Deals places a small stick of dynamite on Firefox's address bar. To use it, you simply browse to a single product page on a supported merchant's site and click the stick of dynamite. We browsed to a merchant's … Read more

SeaMonkey do

SeaMonkey is an open-source Internet suite that combines a Web browser, email client, IRC client, newsreader, and HTML editor in one free application. It's essentially a continuation of the Mozilla Application Suite, which was to be the next-generation Netscape. SeaMonkey Portable is a fully portable version of the SeaMonkey suite from PortableApps. It's got a lot of potential on the desktop, but it's especially useful as an all-in-one solution for mobile users.

SeaMonkey's default theme resembles Netscape's, especially in its color scheme, its bookmarks, and its expandable, open-and-close-able toolbars, but it also incorporates the latest … Read more

Xmarks the spot

It's not uncommon for people to have multiple computers these days: home computer and work computer, or desktop and laptop. Although the ubiquity of computers is convenient, spreading our computer use over several different machines can make it difficult to keep up with our data. Fortunately, bookmarks are something that you can easily sync across machines or browsers thanks to Xmarks for Chrome. This simple extension keeps your bookmarks consistent across locations, ensuring that you always have access to the sites you need to remember.

Like most Chrome extensions, Xmarks installs easily. The extension then guides you through a … Read more

LG Blade: A thin-bezel laptop available everywhere but the U.S.

The LG P430 and P530 are 14- and 15.6-inch laptops, respectively, with something that we hope becomes a trend: smaller screen bezels that reduce the effective size of the chassis. The P430, in particular, promises a "14-inch screen in a 13.3-inch body," with an upper lid design that looks like a return to the thin-bezel laptops that used to exist not so long ago. (We actually already admitted to pining for small bezels...guess we're not alone.)

As far as we can tell, there's not much differentiating the Blade series from similar laptop designs by Samsung, Sony, Acer, and others, but a metallic 13-inch laptop with a slightly bigger screen? Sure, who wouldn't go for that? A second-gen Intel Core i3/i5/i7 CPU and optional Nvidia GeForce GT 520M graphics sound like a solid package.

Of course, there's a catch: these laptops will be available starting in May in Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Asia...but not in North America. LG, may we humbly suggest an addendum?… Read more

Zone defense

TrustWare's BufferZone Free takes a "proactive" approach to Internet security by isolating your browsing activity and personal data in a "Virtual Zone" that excludes all existing and potential threats, even "zero-day" threats that haven't yet been added to antivirus updates. BufferZone doesn't require regular updates, and it doesn't replace your antivirus, firewall, and other security tools. It adds an additional layer of protection by buffering your computer's connections to potential threats. It supports all major browsers and messaging tools as well as other popular software. However, the free version … Read more

Goofy GIFs

It's hard not to prejudge a program called Glitter Frame GIF Maker. We had visions of a program that would likely only be appealing to a 10-year-old girl, and indeed, our prediction wasn't far off. That doesn't make it a bad choice, though--just a program with a limited audience.

The application's interface is plain and fairly easy to navigate. It comes loaded with 10 animated GIF frames, most of which include some combination of flowers, stars, hearts, and bubbles. To apply a frame to an image, simply load the photo you want to use, crop it … Read more

New Dell Alienware M11x, M14x, M18x laptops: Small-, medium-, and large-scale gaming

Despite leaked product announcements dampening the impact of the streamed Webcast today, Alienware added to its product lineup with additional Alienwares at the extreme small and large ends of the laptop spectrum. The M11x, M14x, and M18x cover the size gamut. We've already reviewed the M14x: check out the hands-on video below for a look at the M14 close-up.

Last year, we loved the Alienware M11x, particularly for its combination of size and power. During today's Alienware Webcast, the successor was announced--and it's got the updated Sandy Bridge specs we expected.

The new Alienware M11x R3 starts … Read more

Why you should consider a 14-inch laptop

Despite all the (virtual) ink we spend on hip 11- and 13-inch laptops, the bulk of laptops sold are still in the midsize category. For most consumers, that means a 15.6-inch display, but we consider any laptop with a 14-, 15-, or 16-inch screen to be part of that midsize category. These are the laptops you're most likely going to find sitting on an office desk, in a den, or in a dorm room. We've even seen our fair share of them wedged into airplane seats and in coffee shops, as awkward as that always looks.

If you're set on a midsize laptop, one piece of advice we've offered for the past couple of years is to consider a 14-inch system rather than a more common 15-inch one. While you're trading away a little bit of screen size (but not any screen resolution), we've consistently found that 14-inch midsize laptops offer better overall industrial design, specifically because the standard laptop keyboard fits much better in a 14-inch chassis than a 15-inch one, leaving much less dead space on either side. And, by shaving off a little size and weight, these 14-inch models are easier to carry around--which is important, as we've seen many commuters struggling under the weight of oversize laptops. … Read more
