Attention Vista users

Simple and straightforward is how we like it, and this free utility delivers. It gives Vista users the ability to easily manage their UAC.

WinCleaner UAC Switch's interface consists of two UAC options, but really, you have three options: to run the UAC in normal mode, to run it in quiet mode, and, finally, to turn off the UAC altogether. No matter your selection, you have to restart your computer for it to take effect. After switching our UAC to quiet mode, we noticed a big difference in the number of administrator permission requests when we tried uninstalling and … Read more

Mysterious methods leave users in the dark

It's easy to understand how to use this system optimizer and maintenance tool, but it's not so clear how it goes about getting the job done.

WinMultiFix launches a tabbed interface that isn't particularly well designed, but its plain appearance mirrors its all-business functionality. Despite its no-frills look, the program could use a decent Help file to inform users about its processes and how it works.

For instance, one tab offers a Temp File Cleaner. Operation is simple--enter the drive to clean and press a button. A progress bar provided the only clue that the application was … Read more

An exceptional tool for controlling your computer's accessibility

The options seem endless with this privacy tool, which lets users lock files, functions, and even Web access. Our only complaint is that its Internet options only work with Internet Explorer.

WinLock Professional's user interface is very easy to navigate. All of your protection options are listed under drop-down style command buttons. There are way too many options to list, but the program includes settings for hiding files and folders, and disabling system features such as Windows' Registry Editor and Task Manager. You can also manage your Start Menu display, block specific hot key combinations and even mouse functions. … Read more

A multitude of Vista tweaks

The options for customizing your Vista settings are endless with this free utility, but it lacks password-protection and a useful Help feature.

WinBubble has so many tweaking options that it could easily overwhelm users. The user interface uses tabs and check boxes to keep the multitude of options organized and easy to activate. The program lets you add more options to your context menu, including a Safely Remove Hardware icon, an encrypt/decrypt option, and a WinBubble icon. The Tweaking Toolbox clears your cache and resets folder views. You can even customize icons and add a custom screensaver. Security options … Read more

Interface advertising small price to pay

Though we could have done without the product pushes, this comprehensive file encryption program left our files safe and secure.

MyWinLocker has a professionally designed user interface, but there's some wasted space thanks to the product advertisements. However, aside from those, we found the tab-style fairly easy to navigate. The encryption feature can be accessed several ways--through the main interface, by right-clicking on a specific file or folder, or through Windows Explorer. We like the option to use our master password or create a new one to encrypt the file. Test files were easily and successfully created, and we … Read more

Hands-on: WinOptimizer 6

Since its early days, WinOptimizer has folded a ton of PC-optimizing tools into an attractive, compact, and easily navigable interface. WinOptimizer 6, released on Wednesday exclusively on CNET Download.com, adds some new tweaks to keep things interesting and efficient. We've got the summary and pros and cons below.

What's new AntiSpy module: This tool claims to "deactivate potential spy functions." Upon closer inspection, the module really goes after apps and services that send data back to Microsoft. That's ideal for privacy nuts, but sensationalistic if that kind of app behavior doesn't bother you. … Read more

PC tune-up

Keeping your PC running like a champ requires a bit of maintenance now and again. For your money, you could do much worse than Ashampoo WinOptimizer, a clean, fast, and professional-looking application with a robust tool set.

The fastest route to optimization is from the One-Click Optimization feature, accessible from your desktop or from a tab on the program interface. The second fastest lets you run a quick or a full scan from the Overview tab. Either option starts diagnosing your system using common, customizable settings. For spot-checking or to oversee your own changes, you can click the Modules tab … Read more

Featured Freeware: WinFlog

This handy pair of executables adds muscle to the monitor's power-off function. WinFlog's small multitabbed interface offers four easily invoked functions. WinFlogTurnOff's executable needs no interface as the application simply and immediately turns off the monitor.

Operating WinFlog is very easy, especially for XP users. The program's primary tab lists two options to add a Turn Off Monitor option to the My Computer Icon right-click menu and to the desktop right-click menu. The functions are just as easily removed from the menus using single-click buttons on the same tab. The program's second tab uses a … Read more

Getting a feel for Windows 7

As many people have noted, Windows 7 is a lot like Windows Vista. But by adding multitouch abilities, Microsoft is hoping to create an operating system that, quite literally, feels different from Vista.

And, when you do get to put your hands on Windows 7, it certainly is a much different experience than Windows Vista. For those who missed it, here's a video of the touch features in action, taken at the PDC.

But PCs that use that multitouch technology are bound to cost more than their traditional counterparts. And I'm just not sure how many people will … Read more

Seven things you may not know about Windows 7

LOS ANGELES--While Windows 7 has gotten plenty of attention over the past two weeks, there are some features in there that haven't gotten as much attention. I wrote on Friday about a new programming interface for location-based services. Here are seven more features that caught my eye.

1. Standard approach to mobile broadband Windows 7 treats cellular modems as a standard connection, much like a Wi-Fi network, popping them up in the same available wireless networks dialog.

Sierra Wireless has already said it will support the new approach, which should make life much easier for road warriors (myself included). … Read more
