Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ported to Kindle Fire

Hundreds of years ago, whoever controlled the ports of the world controlled the empire. In the Android world, ports rule once again -- in particular, a developer named Hashcode's port of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to the Amazon Kindle Fire totally rules.

You can find all the necessary files at the xdadevelopers forum, and Lilliputing also has a nice walk-through of the process.… Read more

Google's Nexus 7 costs $152 to build, iSuppli says

The components that make up the Google's entry-level Nexus 7 cost roughly $152, according to a teardown study by IHS iSuppli.

The results, which were first reported by AllThingsD, suggest the possibility of a minor profit from the device, which will retail for $199 and come with 8 gigabytes of storage. It goes on sale this month.

A 16GB model, which sells for $249, costs $159.25, with the higher storage making the difference. iSuppli told AllThingsD that Google would most likely break even on the 8GB model and record a profit on the 16GB one.

iPad Mini could take design cues from iPod

Now that there is an increasing likelihood of Apple releasing an iPad Mini, speculation is starting to get more specific.

Japanese-language Web site Macotakara claims the iPad Mini -- rumored to use a 7.85-inch display -- will be almost as thin as the iPod touch (4th generation), citing "reliable Chinese sources."

That would indeed be thin. The iPod touch is a mere 7.2 mm thick -- a couple of millimeters thinner than the Retina iPad.

The dimensions are similar to Google's Nexus 7: the height is about the same, while the width is a "… Read more

The Kindle Fire 2 will see the Google's Nexus 7 tablet and then raise it, according to an analyst.

Shim gets his information from sources in the "supply chain" -- a collection of companies that manufacture components and assemble products. … Read more

Nexus 7 leaves Google with razor-thin profit margin

Google's first branded tablet was bound to rouse the interest of analysts across the globe, as well as appeal to consumers. Combine that with a bargain-rate price of $199 and curiosity becomes surprise.

Can Google make a fair profit margin on the device, which was announced last week for preorder? Or is the price tag on the Internet giant's first tablet model, the Nexus 7, based on gaining a customer base rather than profit margin?

This is where hardware specialists come in. Research firm UBM TechInsights recently came up with a preliminary cost estimate of $184 per device, … Read more

Episode 3: Where Google has more money than sense

The debate about "unboxing" rages on, so in this week's Always On episode, I actually get down to using a pocket knife to open up the new Google Nexus 7 and Nexus Q. And I try to bring back some of that old Molly snark so many of you have been asking for. Sometimes it's hard to put together a whole show and then remember to write in the personality! I'm working on it, though.

I had a pretty great time running around Google I/O, mainly because of the food, and of course, the … Read more

Skytex announces pair of budget Android 4.0 tablets

The Android tablet wars gained two new combatants today when Skytex Technology announced a pair of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices for release later in July. Priced lower than most products in their class, the tablets might have been much more appealing if only they arrived a few months earlier.

On the lower end of the spectrum, the Skypad Gemini is a 7-inch tablet with a $179 price tag and your standard fare of Android features. Inside are a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Like nearly every other … Read more

Nokia claims Nexus 7 tablet infringes on its patents

Announced just last week, the Nexus 7 tablet is already attracting patent-infringement claims.

Google unveiled the Asus-built 7-inch device running Android's new mobile OS, Jelly Bean, at Google I/O in San Francisco. However, Nokia alleges that the Nexus takes advantage of Wi-Fi technology covered by Nokia patents that neither Google nor Asus approached the Finnish handset maker about licensing.

"Nokia has more than 40 licensees, mainly for its standards essential patent portfolio, including most of the mobile device manufacturers," a Nokia spokesperson told The Inquirer. "Neither Google nor Asus is licensed under our patent portfolio.&… Read more
