Samsung Canada bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to nine Galaxy devices

All eyes are on Samsung this week as it unveils what has arguably become the company's most anticipated Android smartphone to date.

First, however, Sammy has a bit of software business to tend to. Indeed, Samsung Canada today announced that it is making Android 4.0 available to a number of smartphones and tablets in the Galaxy series.

Starting today and rolling out over the remainder of the quarter, Ice Cream Sandwich will deploy to notable devices north of the border, including the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Galaxy Note. Though the exact dates for the … Read more

Ice Cream Sandwich leak spotted on Droid Razr

Ice Cream Sandwich leaks are dripping all over the Motorola Droid Razr today with Android 4.0 apparently spotted on Verizon's fancy thin phone.

Droid Life posted the screen shots from a reader who claims to have gotten ahold of a build with the same file size as the file listed in Verizon's leaked update schedule that I reported on earlier today. That leak appeared to show plans to push out an over-the-air upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich for the Razr beginning on May 21.

I was also whining earlier about the false alarm upgrade I received to my own Droid Razr earlier this week that turned out to be an incremental Gingerbread update, but if rumors are true, that could have been the build required to lay the foundation for the imminent Android 4.0 upgrade.

Baby steps, I suppose. Unless, of course someone wants to share a Dropbox folder that just happens to contain that leaked Ice Cream Sandwich build with me....… Read more

Sony 'Hayabusa' may be 4.5-inch flagship handset

The last, and only, time we spoke of the Sony LT29i, we saw it listed on a leaked 2012 road map.

With an expected price of 493 euros ($650 U.S.), I can assume only that it would be something worthy of flagship status. And if today's rumored details prove to be correct, then that is exactly what we'll be getting this summer.

Said to be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the LT29i, aka the Hayabusa, is pegged with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with an upgraded graphics processor unit. The battery is listed as being 2,200mAh, which puts it slightly above most of today's Android smartphones. As impressive as this all sounds, consider that Sony is rumored to squeeze this into a 7mm case. … Read more

Verizon Android 4.0 push-dates leaked for Razr, Rezound?

The wait for an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich may finally be over for a number of Verizon smartphone users, as of next month. That's if we take for genuine some leaked screens of what appears to be Big Red's device upgrade schedule, posted to Reddit.… Read more

Setting up an Asus Transformer Pad TF300

It is my sincere hope that this post makes up for some of the benign deceit I've been involved with for the past few years here at CNET. Typically when a new product rolls in the door, we're quick to show you an unboxing, and we'll follow that up with a formal First Look video, but we tend to gloss over the nuts and bolts of setting things up.

Arguably, we've been sparing you the boring, unsexy business of setting up your tech. But I suspect that you're at least a little curious to see … Read more

Sony's Tablet S flavored with Ice Cream Sandwich

Sony's Tablet S has a new flavor.

The company announced today that the tablet, which boasts a 9.4-inch screen and support for a host of Sony services like Music Unlimited, is now upgradeable to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The next time Tablet S owners connect to a Wi-Fi network, they'll be prompted to update the software, Sony says.

With the addition of Ice Cream Sandwich, Tablet S owners will now have direct access to the contents on their SD card, and an enhanced lock screen that offers easy access to notifications. Ice Cream Sandwich also … Read more

The new Archos 101 G9: Is it Turbo-worthy?

You might recognize the Wi-Fi-enabled Archos 101 G9 from our previous review, but it's back and it's been "Turbo-fied." At least, that's what the manufacturer has tacked on now that the tablet's dual-core processor has been bumped up from 1GHz to 1.5GHz.

The device also has more storage space, touting a 250GB hard drive. And for all you Android lovers who are tired and done with Honeycomb and Gingerbread, fear not. The device features another noteworthy upgrade in the form of Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you're curious to see what else is … Read more

Ice Cream Sandwich slated for slew of Samsung devices

Samsung phone and tablet owners can now see which devices are on the list to receive the latest flavor of Android.

A Samsung support page breaks down the devices due to receive ICS based on carrier.

For AT&T subscribers, the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Captivate Glide, and Nexus S smartphones are listed, as is the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet. The half-phone/half-tablet Galaxy Note is on the list as well.

Verizon customers who own the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet are also destined for Ice Cream Sandwich.… Read more

Qualcomm chip in HTC One S is speed demon, says analyst

Qualcomm is proving that a phone doesn't have to be quad-core to be fast.

"Scoring 25 percent higher than its older siblings...in [central processing unit] performance benchmarks, shows Qualcomm has delivered on its promise for higher performance CPU," Jim Mielke, vice president of engineering at ABI Research, said in a note today, referring to the HTC One S.

That phone comes with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system.

The HTC smartphone taps the first Qualcomm 28-nanometer (nm) chip -- the "Snapdragon" MSM8260A. That's a big step up in chip … Read more

Sprint: Ice Cream Sandwich updates are coming

The Samsung Nexus S 4G isn't the only Sprint phone to tuck into an Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Today, Sprint announced on its Web site that it's readying over-the-air ICS updates for Android smartphones that include the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, among others.

Sprint has promised to "begin to roll out Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, to our customers in 2012," but isn't sharing its timetable or the complete list of handsets it'll support. With more than half a year to go before 2012's close, Sprint's guidance remains … Read more
