Smartphones with ginormous screens (roundup)

For some of you, there's no such thing as too huge when it comes to smartphone screens. The larger the display, the more space you have for reading e-books and news stories, playing games, and immersing yourself in photos and video graphics. Whether you have enormous mitts, the desire for a smartphone that performs tablet functions, or just a penchant for big, beautiful screens, these are for you.

Samsung is on the verge of releasing an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for its Galaxy S III smartphone, according to a recent SamMobile report. All that stands in the way, or so it seems, is a final approval from the Google team. … Read more

Samsung launches Galaxy Note 10.1; 4G LTE version later this year

After a long wait, Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 is finally launching.

The device, which was first unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, comes with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The most notable advancement over its predecessor, however, is the device's screen, which measures 10.1 inches. The original Samsung Galaxy Note comes with a 5.3-inch screen.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with Samsung's S Pen stylus, allowing users to "write" all over the screen. The device comes in a Wi-Fi-only model, … Read more

The best in gadgets this week

The best tech we reviewed this week is just that: the best. But these devices aren't without a few contradictions.

For example, Wayne Cunningham reviewed one of the most lovely-looking cars on the outside, the 2012 BMW 335i, which comes with a top-notch stereo and pleasing dashboard tech but a shockingly bland interior. Then Jessica Dolcourt took a hard look at T-Mobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy Note, which arrived at the carrier last Monday. The Note, we note (yeah, see what I did there? I'm sorry. Couldn't help it.), is a polarizing paradox of a … Read more

Samsung invite suggests Galaxy Note 10.1 for August 15

Samsung has just confirmed one of my predictions for its now less-mysterious August 15 product launch in New York: the product in question is definitely a tablet.

CNET's invitation to the unveiling depicts an outline of a device with tablet dimensions in casual, artistic lines. That bolsters my belief that we'll be seeing a U.S. release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-fledged tablet that will make use of a stylus to interact with productivity and creativity tools. (Hence the doodles on the invitation.)

I first saw the Galaxy Note 10.1 at Mobile World … Read more

It's seems we're one step closer to Samsung unleashing a new Galaxy Note smartphone or tablet at the end of this month. The South Korean company reportedly told Reuters that it's debuting the next Galaxy Note product during an event on August 29.

"We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin on August 29," a Samsung spokesman reportedly told Reuters today.

Samsung schedules Unpacked event for IFA conference

Brace yourselves, Samsung fans. The company has scheduled a new Unpacked event for August 29, where it's assumed it will debut a new Galaxy device. As to whether we're in for a smartphone or tablet remains unclear at this point, but our Magic 8-Ball points to both. Specifically, we might expect a hybrid of the two form factors in Samsung's second world version of the Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Note II.

Whispers have circulated for some time now that Samsung is readying a new version of the so-called phablet, with an impending fall arrival.… Read more

Questions rise over Skype wiretapping

It's time to tap into the juiciest tech conversations for Monday:

Microsoft has not given a straight answer about whether its Skype service can facilitate law enforcement wiretapping of conversations. Previously, the online chat service was so heavily encrypted that the company went on the record about not being able to participate with wiretapping.

But Skype just made a change to its technology, and some say the changes make it possible to intercept a call. But when asked, Microsoft didn't admit if wiretapping was possible. It told Slate that Skype "co-operates with law enforcement agencies as much … Read more

Google's Wonder Woman could save Yahoo

Tuesday's biggest tech story has a superstar trading teams, and I'm not talking Jeremy Lin:

Are you dusting off that Yahoo email account? Freshening up your Flickr page? Yahoo got a dose of Google cool factor with its new CEO, 37-year-old Marissa Mayer. She was a top executive at Google and Google's first female employee. She oversaw pretty much every Google service that's a common part of your life, including maps and search. Expect Mayer to breathe new life into Yahoo's services. Perhaps she can even lure talented computer minds to join her new team. … Read more
