Pentax has announced the release of the Pentax SMC DA 17-70mm f4 AL SDM lens for Pentax digital SLR cameras. PhotographyBay translates a rumor from Kamera & Bild about possible specifications for the possible Canon Rebel XS which PhotographyBay speculates will possibly be announced at Photokina (early Fall). The speculative specs include a 10-megapixel sensor, 7-point AF, 3 frame per second burst, 2.5-inch LCD with Live View support and a "cheap price."

Today, Olympus announced the E-520 dSLR, the replacement for the E-510 and step-up model from its E-420. The feature set is very similar to the E-420, but for the extra dough you do get some significant capabilities, such as sensor-shift stabilization (including an updated system with a mode that accommodates panning while vertically oriented), a larger continuous-shooting buffer and a deeper grip.

When it comes to the strategically important and fast-growing market of SLR cameras, Canon remained No. 1 worldwide in 2007 but lost share to Nikon, new statistics show.

Canon sold 3.18 million single-lens reflex cameras in 2007 compared with Nikon's 2.98 million, according to a study released Tuesday by market researcher IDC. That represents a 42.7 percent and 40 percent share, respectively, of the 2007 SLR market. It's a much narrower margin for Canon than in 2006, when it had 46.7 percent of the market, compared with Nikon's 33 percent.

The Photo District News' blog is pointing to a post on Masterchong.com that has photos of Sony's upcoming 24.6-megapixel, full-35mm-frame sensor SLR from the Photo Imaging Expo in Tokyo, Japan.
