Report: Wii price cut to $150 in the works

The Nintendo Wii may be getting a price cut next month.

Citing anonymous sources, Engadget is reporting that Nintendo plans to cut the price of its Wii console to $150. The deal would go into effect on May 15, the technology blog said.

For months now, reports have been swirling that Nintendo would eventually cut the price of the Wii. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said in a research note in February that all three console makers would be forced to cut the price of their devices this year as demand starts to fade.

"After maintaining console prices at historically … Read more

Apple announces Final Cut Pro X

Apple tonight took the wraps off Final Cut Pro X, a new version of its professional video-editing software that the company says is a complete rewrite of the 12-year-old platform.

Final Cut X is a 64-bit application written in Apple's Cocoa. It sports a new interface, as well as features to speed up the editing process, including background rendering, full use of multicore processors, and Apple's Grand Central Dispatch system, as well as the option to make edits as footage is being imported.

Apple says the tool will be available to users in June as a direct download for $299, replacing the $199 Final Cut Express, and coming in at a steep discount compared with the company's $999 Final Cut Studio suite.

The new software--which was announced at the annual Supermeet editor meet-up event that takes place in concert with the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Vegas--marked a return of Apple releasing a new version of the software at NAB. The company was once again not at the show itself, however. … Read more

Apple to unveil new Final Cut Pro at NAB event?

It's been awhile since a new version of Apple's Final Cut Pro video editing software was released, but that may change at next week's annual National Association of Broadcasters show. A new report from ProVideoCoalition says Apple plans on "taking over" the 10th annual SuperMeet event taking place on April 12 to announce a new version of the software.

The proof there is that some SuperMeet sponsors, including Canon, were purportedly told by event organizers that Apple had chosen SuperMeet as its venue to make the announcement and blocked out all stage time for its … Read more

Chop like a ninja!

Fruit Ninja HD is a faithful iPad adaptation of the popular iPhone and iPod Touch game of the same name. This HD version adds same-device multiplayer and sharper graphics to the original's unique gameplay.

The interface hasn't changed, but the game's goofy and addictive premise--slashing through fast-flying fruit with swiping strokes of a virtual sword--works especially well on the iPad's bigger screen. You can even "go Wolverine" with up to eight-finger multitouch.

The game gives you several options for solo and multiplayer: In single-player, you can play Classic (the game ends when you hit … Read more

The 404 764: Where evil has its winning ways (podcast)

Every Thursday is a treat for 404 Podcast listeners because Natali Morris is on the show, but today is extra special because it's Steve Jobs's birthday! To celebrate, Apple announced a flock of brand new Macbook Pro laptops with big changes under the hood.

The new 13, 15, and 17 inch sizes all have a high def web cam and Intel's new Sandy Bridge processors, but they're also the first to include Intel's new hardware connector called Thunderbolt, the official name for Intel's Light Peak I/O data transfer technology.

Thunderbolt is a big step for Apple and computers in general as it's a new cable system that unifies the way that devices like smartphones, hard drives, and other accesories interface with computers.

The technology boosts the speed and responsiveness of media files along a single wire, and Intel claims it can transfer a full HD movie in less than 30 seconds. It also uses the exact same shape as Apple's current Mini DisplayPort for backward compatibility with existing Apple displays.
