Coffeemaker tells you when

I don't think I have ever measured coffee in order to extract the correct brew. I am simply not capable of such calculations in the precoffee morning. It is a paradox that I find myself in on a daily basis: I need caffeine to have the necessary motor skills to have the coordination to even make a pot of coffee. Luckily, I have found a workaround. Experience has taught me when to stop pouring beans into the grinder. After eyeballing the level, I know that the resulting brew will be enjoyable for all. However, switch out my familiar grinder … Read more

Solving society's problems, one mug at a time

For more than 60 years, Germany's Fraunhofer Institute has promoted and undertaken "applied research...of wide benefit to society as a whole," according to its mission statement. That's why it's not at all surprising to hear that they recently came up with the Perfect Coffee Mug, a temperature-regulating drinking receptacle that keeps coffee at the ideal drinking temperature for up to 30 minutes.

The mug uses phase change material (PCM)--that's a substance with a high heat of fusion that can store and release energy (heat) over time. By adjusting the amount of PCM … Read more

Coffee on demand

With just a few words, you can tell the Voice Interactive Coffee Maker when you want your coffee--without any need to mess around with buttons or settings. Future of mobile commerce, in a skinny vanilla latte?

Your decaf caramel macchiatos and no-whip pumpkin spice lattes are going mobile.

In a double-shot launch (sorry), coffee giant Starbucks unveiled late Tuesday its first two iPhone apps. The first one, called MyStarbucks, is a no-brainer: you can use the phone's GPS capability to find nearby stores (previously, this was available via text message), search ingredient and calorie information for Starbucks beverages, study coffee bean varieties, and build virtual drinks to see what exactly would be in one if you ordered it.

But it's the second app, called Starbucks Card Mobile, that could be worth a double-take. The … Read more

Heavy-duty coffee making

Think about it: which kitchen appliance do you use each and every day? (No, the refrigerator doesn't count.) For some it might be the oven, but the work week and quality takeout food means it probably gets a rest occasionally. Perhaps the microwave sees action every day, or maybe not; again other options for mealtime are out there. No, there is one appliance in particular that owners not only use daily, but also wake up and practically run to: the coffee maker.

The Krups Die-Cast 12-Cup Coffee Maker is a heavy-duty machine designed for everyday use. The 1100-watt coffee … Read more

Beat those palpitations with a caffeine test kit

Here's one for the paranoid decaf coffee drinker--D-Caf Test Strips. These tiny strips of paper will tell you if there is too much caffeine in the beverage when you dip one in a small sample. It takes about 30 seconds to display a result and will work with both hot and cold coffee.

Those who get their days ruined by intolerance to caffeine may want to check it out at online shopping site The Spoon Sisters, which sells the product for $9.95 per pack of 20 strips. Or, if we may so suggest, drink something other than coffee. … Read more

Plug in that morning coffee (mug)

Mornings are made on routines. From the moment the alarm clock wakes us up we're off and running on autopilot. Breakfast is made and devoured with barely a glimmer of recognition, and then we are off and out the door, coffee in hand. Cold coffee, of course, because we are always running late.

This performance may play out day after day, but that doesn't mean a break in the routine would necessarily mess it up. A little change could go a long way. At least in the case of having your coffee at a drinkable temperature.

A simple … Read more
