GM spokesman calls Made in USA Foundation charges 'really bizarre'

The debate over whether General Motors is violating the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA), by not including window stickers that identify where the cars are made, continues.

We reported on Friday that the Made in the USA Foundation claims GM is willfully misleading consumers by leaving out labeling that identifies where the cars were made.

Joel D. Joseph, chairman of the Made in the USA Foundation, said in a release on Friday, "General Motors wants to hide the fact that, even after the government bailout, it has moved production of vehicles offshore. The Cadillac SRX is now made in … Read more

Chevy Sonic joins in the small car boom

DETROIT - Back in 2007, GM showed three small car designs, intending to shuck its old SUV habit and cater to economic-minded buyers. After some time spent sifting the group, GM settled on one of the cars, producing it as the Chevy Spark in Europe, but not in the U.S.

After some dithering, the company came up with a new, slightly larger, less funky looking version of the Spark aimed at the U.S. This new car is called the Sonic, and replaces the current Aveo.

The Sonic is a small car, but looks substantial, with a stance reminiscent … Read more

GM working on battery switch for U.K. Volt

The first 40 miles you drive in a fully charged 2011 Chevrolet Volt uses energy stored in the 16kWh battery to propel the vehicle, with the 1.4-liter gas engine kicking in only when the battery is drained and needs to be recharged. But GM engineers are working on a switch for the British version of the Volt, the Vauxhall Ampera slated for 2012, that will let U.K. drivers decide when to drive in electric-only mode and when to use the gas engine, according to an article in TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk.

The tweak is designed to suit the driving … Read more

U.S. chip manufacturing in the age of the iPad

Behind the fly-off-the-shelf popularity of products like Apple's iPad and iPhone are hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs--mostly overseas. Is it possible to create more of those jobs here in the U.S. to combat chronically high levels of unemployment?

Personal computing is moving rapidly beyond the laptop. And there's no better example than Apple, whose most popular products are arguably now the iPhone and the iPad. The surging demand for anything Apple is causing a seismic shift in chip manufacturing to Asia, the hotbed of new silicon ecosystems. Though companies like Hewlett-Packard and Dell also play a … Read more

Every year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Green Car Journal crowns one new car the Green Car of the Year. This year that vehicle is the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

In previous years, this honor has gone to vehicles as varied as the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid to Toyota's Prius, while the last two years have been dominated by Volkswagen and Audi's TDI vehicles. This year, Chevrolet brings it back to the electric camp with its solution to what GM calls range anxiety: a range extended EV powertrain that starts as an electric, but features a gasoline engine that … Read more
