Apple gave up a sliver of Internet market share last month, according to preliminary figures released Sunday by Web metrics company Net Applications.

The Mac OS had been hovering around the 10 percent mark among operating systems accessing the Web. But in its Operating System Market Share report for February, Net Applications showed the Mac OS at 9.71 percent, down from 9.93 percent in January. Meanwhile, Microsoft Windows' Internet share increased to 89.37 percent from 88.26 percent in January.

On the horizon for the next release of Google's Chrome browser is something I've long lusted after: the option to browse the Web in full screen. On Wednesday, an early version of this feature came to the latest developer build of Chrome (v.2.0.166.1). This is a strange little program that purports to take you to the FWG Government site, whatever that is. But this isn't a program you should try if you're looking for an alternative to your current browser. The FWG-Promo Browser is a browser only in the loosest sense of the word.

ZoneAlarm Forcefield offers an extra layer of protection while browsing the Web by protecting users from spyware and phishing sites. While it did successfully notify us of suspicious content, we wouldn't rely solely on this program for protection.

The much-anticipated Firefox 3.1 beta 2 is out and about for Windows and Mac users, incorporating the faster JavaScript engine TraceMonkey as the default setting and introducing Private Browsing, which has been in development for years. There are other improvements, of course, but the big one is the ability to turn off the cache and other private data settings with a single click.

KidZui, the child-safe browser maker, has put out a Firefox extension that offers all the functionality of its standalone browser right inside of Firefox.

Once installed and activated by a parent, it locks the child (or anyone else for that matter) out of accessing non-Kidzui approved sites, or other areas of the computer, by taking up the entire screen.
