Archos 705 WiFi PVP on preorder

Amazon.com is now showing preorder pages for the mythical Archos 705 WiFi portable video player. If you're in the market for a super-sized, Internet-ready PVP for the holidays, the 705 WiFi comes in 80GB and 160GB capacities for $399 and $499, respectively. For the price, you get a 7-inch, 800x480 touch screen, Mac/PC compatibility, and all the features found in the latest Archos 605 WiFi--most notably, the online content portal.

What do you think? Is the 705 making you salivate? Can a PVP ever be too big?

Archos 105 MP3 player reviewed

You've heard me wax poetic about the excellent Archos 605 WiFi portable video player, and even its smaller brother, the Archos 405. Now we have the smallest addition to the family, the Archos 105. With a 1.8-inch screen, 2GB of storage, and a rock-bottom price tag of $89, the 105 is the most affordable player ever released by Archos. But is a low price and a big screen enough to make us squeal with delight? You'll have to take a look at our Archos 105 full review and First Look video to find out.

Top 5 reasons not to buy a new iPod

After awarding Apple's iPod Classic and iPod Nano an 8 out of 10 rating over on CNET Reviews, I think it's fair to say that I think both products are exceptional. Still, the iPod is not for everybody. If you're thinking about using that $100 iPhone credit toward a shiny new Nano or Classic, here are five reasons that might give you pause.

5. iTunes 7.4 is required

Requiring the latest version of iTunes might not seem like such a big deal, but if your computer doesn't play friendly with the latest build of iTunes--you're screwed. iTunes 7.4 requires OSX 10.3.9 or later for Mac users, and Windows XP or 32-bit editions of Windows Vista for the PC.

4. No more built-in video output

Gone are the days when you could just plug a $10 minijack AV cable… Read more

Archos 405 gets purple like Barney

In a move that will surely delight Prince, the latest Archos 405 portable video player will apparently be available in purple at tomorrow's launch. The purple version will have the same price and 2GB capacity as its silver brother. Despite my suspicions, it will not smell like potpourri or grape Kool-Aid. Hands-on with the Archos 405

We reviewed one of our favorite gadgets of 2007 earlier this month--the all-sexed-up Archos 605. It was quite literally the most bootylicious piece of tech we'd seen all year. However, for those of you who can't afford the class "A" model, the cheaper, stripped-down version sells for half the price but with half the spec. This younger sibling goes by the name 405.

The Archos 405 is a small and portable multimedia player, with an 89mm (3.5-inch) colour screen and superb sound quality. Initially you may be disappointed about the 2GB internal memory capacity, especially … Read more

Slide show roundup: Rolls-Royce Phantom, 10 pretty cars, and YouTube on Apple TV

So, someone over at Rolls-Royce trusted our Car Tech guys enough to lend them a 2007 Rolls-Royce Phantom to review. Wow--fancy! It even has a hood ornament that retracts into the hood when the doors are locked. Now no one will steal the "Spirit of Ecstasy" and make a necklace. Is car bling still cool? Is the word "bling" even cool?

Anyway, we also have some pictures of the 10 most attractive cars that CNET has reviewed. Plus, there are photos of the Sprint Mogul by HTC and a look at YouTube videos on Apple TV. … Read more

Photos: Archos 605 WiFi in the wild

As reported earlier, the new Archos PVPs are due out at the beginning of September. Unfortunately, Jasmine and I couldn't wait that long, so we contacted the product reps at Archos to schedule some one-on-one time. The following is a photo gallery that details some of the new features we can expect from the new line once it launches (plus some shots of the set-top DVR prototype).

New Archos media players: Look out, iPhone?

Archos announced its 2007 lineup of media player/recorders today at press events in both Europe and New York, introducing four new portable models as well as the company's first set-top DVR.

The big news--as reported earlier--is that the new Wi-Fi-enabled portables include direct access to an online "Content Portal" and offer a Flash-supported Web browser option. The portal offers pay-per-download CinemaNow movies--just use the touchscreen to pick the movie you want to buy and download it to the internal hard drive, no PC required. The Opera browser--a $30 option on Wi-Fi models--includes a Flash plug-in. … Read more

Updated: Archos announces new line of MP3 players and PVPs

An Archos press event in France has revealed the new Archos line a mere hours before an event is scheduled to take place in the United States. Since neither I nor the folks at Engadget (I'm guessing) can be completely trusted with our French translation, I have relatively few details to confirm. I can tell you the company is launching a new flash player, the 2GB 105, as well as a revamped PVP line, including the 405, the 705, and the 605 WiFi. We'll have some more information here on Crave after the U.S. event.

Update: I … Read more
