Toshiba's $12,000 55-inch 4K 3D TV--dazzling!

MAKUHARI, Japan--Toshiba has been showing off a dazzling 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV here at the Ceatec technology trade show ahead of its December release in Japan and Germany, and people are queuing for half an hour to see it.

The Regza 55X3 has a QFHD (Quad Full HD) screen with 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. That's about 8.29 million pixels, four times that of full HD, and quite a leap from previous 3D Regza models. It will be the world's first 4K TV for the consumer market.

Toshiba ultra-thin AT700 tablet wows Ceatec crowds

MAKUHARI, Japan--Toshiba has underlined its commitment to boosting its tablet business with a 10.1-inch Android slate it calls the thinnest and lightest in the world.

People are lining up here at Ceatec 2011 outside of Tokyo to check out the Regza AT700, which runs on Android 3.2, is 7.7mm (0.3 inches) thick, and weighs 558 grams (1.23 pounds).

Toshiba also announced a 7-inch version, the AT3S0, at 12.1mm thick and weighing 379 grams (0.83 pound).

Like the company's Thrive tabs, the AT700 and AT3S0 run version 3.2 of Android, have 1GB of memory, 1,280x800-pixel resolution, and Resolution+ upscaling technology to improve low-resolution video. … Read more

Dell refreshes Inspiron all-in-one desktops

HP has offered up brand-new all-in-ones for the holidays, and newcomers Samsung and Toshiba have given the category fresh competition, but Dell has opted for a more conservative approach with its updated Inspiron One 2320 all-in-one announced this morning. Rather than revamping its Inspiron One 2305 with a whole new look, Dell has focused instead on updating the Inspiron One's internal components (sound familiar?)

Toshiba's Thrive 7 tablet: Hands-on

Toshiba is tossing a new 7-inch Honeycomb tablet into the fray this December, hot on the heels of the 10-inch tablet it launched in July. Pricing is yet to be determined, but with the original Thrive floating out there at around $400, let's hope this little guy comes in under that.

The Thrive 7 looks and performs just as if you'd blasted the 10-inch Thrive with a shrink ray. It's uses the same 1GHz, dual-core Nvidia processor, the same 1GB of RAM, same front and rear cameras, and most surprisingly--the same screen resolution.

Toshiba expands all-in-one line with 23-inch DX730

Former laptop-exclusive Toshiba has introduced its second all-in-one desktop this year, debuting the 23-inch, touch-screen-equipped DX730. This new unit joins the 21.5-inch DX1210 which Toshiba introduced this past August.

Based on its specs, the $956.99 DX730 sounds like a competitive-enough all-in-one compared with other Windows-based touch-screen models in its price range. Toshiba offers a choice of second-generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, a 1TB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and an HDMI input for connecting external media components. Toshiba Canvio portable drives get USB 3.0, cloud backup

Toshiba announced today the updated version of its Canvio portable drive, which now comes with USB 3.0 and cloud backup capability. The original version of the drive was announced more than a year ago and offers only USB 2.0 connectivity.

The Canvio 3.0 drive is available now in three capacities, 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB, which cost $90, $110, and $140, respectively. The drive is preloaded with NTI BackupNow EZ software for Windows, which enables users to back up both to the portable drive and to the cloud. Toshiba says the software will scan a computer automatically for important documents and recommend which files to back up to the cloud and which to back up to the directly connected portable storage device. It's unclear, however, if the online storage is free, and if so how much storage is included with the drive.

Toshiba also announced that its entry-level Canvio Basics storage drive now comes with USB 3.0, too. The Canvio Basics 3.0 is also available now in 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB versions that each cost $10 less than the Canvio 3.0 of the same capacity.… Read more

Rounding up the latest 14-inch laptops

This may come as a surprise, but laptop shoppers don't always take our advice to heart. For example, we've strongly suggested that people in the market for a midsize laptop (generally one with a 14-, 15-, or 16-inch display) focus their attention on the 14-inch end of that spectrum rather than the more common 15-inch size.

Why? Sure, you're trading away a little bit of screen size (though usually not any screen resolution), but 14-inch midsize laptops offer better overall industrial design, largely because the standard laptop keyboard fits much better in a 14-inch chassis than a 15-inch one, leaving much less dead space on either side.

But despite our protestations, 15-inch models still outsell 14-inch ones, even though they're significantly less portable in most cases. So if you're in the market for a midsize laptop, and want to shave off a little size and weight while keeping the same CPU power and screen resolution, check out our handy list of recent 14-inch laptops below.

Toshiba SL417U review: Midrange LED for less

The capability to stream Netflix and other Internet sources and the thin profile imparted by its edge-lit LED backlight, mark the Toshiba SL417U as a midrange HDTV these days. In its favor, this set demands relatively little cash for those extras, and built-in Wi-Fi gives it a leg up on some of the competition. It does sacrifice picture quality in many categories, however, with variable black levels and less-impressive color. That said, for less critical viewers who want the convenience of online extras built-in, the SL417U is a solid bargain.

Toshiba Satellite P745D-S4240 review: AMD A6 processor worth the savings?

Underneath the seemingly predictable veneer of the 14-inch Toshiba Satellite P745D-S4240 are two new stories, albeit ones that might not interest the average person much. The Satellite P series is a new laptop line for Toshiba, although you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between it and the M, A, and L series of Satellite laptops (the P replaces the M and A).
