iPad Mini costs at least $188 to build, teardown reveals

The iPad Mini has been in consumers' hands for only a few days, but we already have a better idea of what's in Apple's new tablet and how much it costs to make.

A teardown of the device conducted by IHS concluded that the base 16GB Wi-Fi model, which Apple sells for $329, costs about $188 to build, according to an All Things Digital report. The 32GB and 64GB models cost an additional $90 and $162 to build, respectively, the firm found.

In addition to the cost of materials, the teardown also revealed the identities of some of the device's component suppliers. LG Display and AU Optronics supplied the 7.9-inch touch-sensitive display components, which cost about $80, or about 43 percent of the device's total bill of materials. … Read more

Apple accused of hiding U.K. Samsung 'apology' with code

No matter how tall their browser window is or how dense their screen resolution, visitors to Apple's U.K. Web site must scroll down the page to view the "apology" to Samsung that a U.K. Court of Appeal recently ordered Apple to display.

First noted by users on news-sharing site Reddit, Apple has within the past few weeks installed JavaScript code that dynamically resizes the central image on the Apple U.K. Web site to take up the maximum amount of space possible.

As a result, the central image -- currently an iPad Mini -- takes … Read more

Apple's mea culpa: U.K. site posts apology, new statement

Apple has reissued and updated its Samsung "apology" statement on its British Web site after a U.K. Court of Appeal found it to be "untrue" and "incorrect."

It comes off weeks of back and forth from the U.K. courts after Samsung scored a rare legal win over Apple, after the iPhone and iPad maker lost an iPad design patent suit it brought to the British court against rival tablet maker Samsung.

On October 18, U.K. High Court Judge Colin Birss originally ruled that Apple must run notices on its U.K. … Read more

The future of the iPad

Now that the iPad line has split into two families, the Mini and the Retina, it might make you wonder where the iPad, as a product, is heading. I've wondered it, too, even going back to the days before the Mini. The third-gen Retina Display iPad was such a complete product that it made me curious: where could iPads go next?

As the days go on since reviewing the iPad Mini, I look back and forth between both the "large iPad" and the Mini. I carry both around (I don't normally travel with two iPads -- they're review samples, I own a third-gen). I use them around my home and outside. They're awfully similar in experience, different in size and speed. But I think there's something else going on. I think iPads, to some degree, are entering a transition.… Read more

What's better: A $329 iPad Mini or $319 iPad 2?

As Ned Flanders would say: here's a dilly of a pickle!

You've probably heard that the iPad Mini went on sale today, with a price tag of $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.

What you may not know is that the online Apple Store now sells the refurbished iPad 2 with Wi-Fi (16GB) for $319 shipped. (It's also available in white for that price.)

That begs a very interesting question: with a price difference of just $10, which is the smarter buy? (I know, I know: "The Kindle Fire!" Ba-dump-bump. We're here to compare … Read more

iPad Mini launch fails to impress Wall Street

Despite shoppers lining up around the world for Apple's freshly launched tablets, Wall Street appears to be unimpressed.

Shares of Apple's stock closed at $576.67, down $19.87, or 3.33 percent, on Friday, continuing a downward trend since late September.

The dip comes amid what appears to be brisk sales of the iPad Mini, though at a noticeably smaller scale than that of other major product launches. Analysts expect the company to sell anywhere from 800,000 to 1.5 million of the devices this weekend, which would be half the number of third-generation iPads Apple … Read more

Jony Ive's challenge: Redesigning the human-computer interface for the masses

It shouldn't be a surprise to learn that Apple suffers from political infighting, fiefdoms, and dysfunctional relationships. What company doesn't, especially a large company full of big egos, with money to burn? And so we learned from various reports this week that CEO Tim Cook made a calculated decision to remove divisive software head Scott Forstall and hand over some of his responsibilities to hardware design guru Jony Ive.

It also shouldn't be a surprise that Ive's power base is expanding. He already had the most powerful voice among Apple executives, if you believe what … Read more

The iPad Mini: So, did you buy one?

The iPad Mini arrived in Apple stores today, leading many to wonder if it would lead to long lines, early sellouts, tears, riots, plagues, and other situations that typically accompany Apple's new-product releases. (Actually, as CNET's Josh Lowensohn just reported, the Mini did sell out in Apple's big New York City store.)

My question for you: Did you go buy an iPad Mini today? If so, did you find yourself standing in a long line? And did the store appear to have enough stock to satisfy customers?

Here's what happened to me, starting with a little … Read more

Apple's iPad Mini doesn't merit a grand launch

Apple has launched the iPad Mini at its retail stores and the news is -- wait for it -- the lines aren't all that long.

Well, let's see. On the East Coast, folks are more worried about getting power back from that storm called Sandy. Others are trying to get into New York, with little luck. Everywhere else, the lines are so-so at best. In other words, there's not a big rush for the iPad Mini. And there shouldn't be. The product isn't revolutionary, has a defined role, and is saddled with a price that … Read more

iPad Mini sells out quickly at Apple's top NYC store

While Apple is expected to sell far less iPads this weekend than it did with its tablet launch earlier this year, one of the company's major stores is already sold out.

Apple's "cube" store on Fifth Avenue in New York City, sold out of both iPad Mini models in about two hours. The white model sold out first, analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets wrote in a note this morning, followed about an hour later by the black.

"We believe these early stock outs are driven by the combination of strong demand, combined with … Read more
