Double the waffles in half the time

Shopping for a new waffle maker raises a few questions that one must be prepared to address. Familiarity with one's preferences must be determined before diving in, because once decided, there is no going back. (Unless, of course, dealing with returns and restocking fees aren't a concern.) Any decision has to factor in a wealth of variables, from how deep the pockets are to how powerful the waffle maker is (and hence, how crisp the exterior of the resulting waffles are). No matter what your preference, perhaps the biggest choice to make is how many waffles you want.… Read more

Pancake Pen makes breakfast easier

The last time I went to the grocery store, I saw premade pancake batter in the dairy aisle. From what I've heard, it's OK; however, I'm sure it doesn't really compare with my family's pancake recipe. But I kept thinking about the container--it looks easier to use if you want to pour batter into a mold or a waffle iron. The Pancake Pen provides the same service, while still letting you mix up that secret family recipe. You can mix your batter up in the bottle of the Pancake Pen, screw on the lid and … Read more

Flip open a relationship with your waffle maker

Buying a waffle iron is a commitment. The relationship-ready have to be prepared to do what it takes to make a lasting relationship work. This of course means compromise. When it comes to waffle irons, this means choosing a device that is usually capable of only one thing: making waffles. It's hard to make room on our cluttered kitchen counters for devices that only do one thing. Luckily, it doesn't have to be this way.

The Wolfgang Puck Rotating Grill-and-Bake Waffle Iron extends its usefulness beyond simply making waffles. Featuring removable plates, the appliance doubles as an indoor … Read more

Batter up! Basic waffle maker cooks tasty waffles

If you've read anything I've ever posted, you know that I have four children who seem to believe they are entitled to several meals daily, and I am cheap. A favorite breakfast in my house is waffles. Think two per child, per day. Plus sometimes I eat one--or two. So figure that we eat about 50 waffles per week.

I've tried store brands, national brands purchased on sale with coupons, and bulk-size boxes. However, the lowest price I can find is about $1 for 10 waffles, so I'm paying at least $5 per week--often quite a … Read more

Breakfast waffles and more

Some kitchen appliances are hard to emulate. Just try making a waffle without a waffle iron. It's not very easy to do. You may end up with something that goes great with bacon and eggs, but that doesn't mean you got yourself a waffle. In fact, I'm not even quite sure how one would go about trying to make a waffle without a waffle maker. Most likely, one would just settle for pancakes. Delicious maybe, but waffles they are not.

Waffle with ease

While pancakes are pretty par for the course in my house, homemade waffles are a special treat. After all, I can just pour a cup of batter into my skillet and produce pancakes. Waffles take a little more effort (and a waffle iron). Nordic Ware has a way to simplify the process--and make waffles a more routine occurrence. The Nordic Ware Waffle Pancake Pan makes waffles just as easy as pancakes. It's a cast-aluminum griddle that you can just pour your batter onto. It has seven spaces for small waffles: you will need to flip your waffles as you … Read more

Bring the breakfast bar home

Waffles are good any time of the day or night. This may be because waffles are good topped with sweet or savory ingredients. From chicken and waffles to ice cream and berries, the waffle is a versatile base for many a delicious meal.

Perhaps more amazing than the ability to have waffles with any meal is the ability to have breakfast anytime. The breakfast bar in a hotel closes at a certain hour and the biscuit-selling fast-food joints do the same. Many restaurants serve breakfast until a predetermined time. For those who want 24-hour breakfast availability, it's best to … Read more

Old MacDonald's waffle iron

This morning I was hungry for waffles. Not pancakes, but waffles. Sometimes I keep a box of Eggos in the freezer, but those aren't really waffle-waffles. Eggos, at least to my taste buds, are more of a buttery blueberry cookie than they are a waffle, so popping a couple of those in the toaster ain't gonna do the trick. The craving is for waffles and waffles only. Unfortunately, I only have a cheap waffle iron that produces less than stellar results. It is in this frame of mind that I go window-shopping for waffle irons.

For better pancakes, a batter gun

It's not actually a weapon, though it does have a trigger: This Batter Dispenser ($30) from Williams-Sonoma promises to neatly distribute perfect blobs of batter onto a hot griddle or waffle iron. You can choose among three different sizes of pancakes, and the catalog copy claims that even batters with small berries or chocolate chips will easily flow through the valve. Most importantly, the plastic device is dishwasher safe.

The Batter Dispenser was singled out for ridicule on the organization blog Unclutterer, the author of which suspects its primary role will be taking up valuable space in your kitchen. … Read more
