VW tries to out-Vader its last Super Bowl ad

As Bruce Willis can attest, sequels are never easy. Often, they come on the back of unexpected success. The creators are unprepared.

Sympathy is, therefore, deserving to those at VW who had to follow up last year's Super Bowl ad in which a little boy dressed like Darth Vader wanted to force everyday objects to accede to his will.

However, this year's VW follow-up might disappoint some. Here we have a dog trying to lose weight so he can chase a shiny red VW Beetle. Yes, VW already offered a teaser featuring dogs barking the Star Wars Imperial … Read more

VW's dogs bark 'Star Wars' theme to tease Super Bowl

The Super Bowl, an advertising festival with men in long, tight pants performing calisthenic cabaret at various intervals, is a big-budget affair.

Often, though, it is simplicity that stands out.

Last year, it was hard not to love the little boy dressed as Darth Vader who was desperate to use to the Force to control all that crossed his gaze and finally succeeded with VW's Passat.

This year, VW has continued the "Star Wars" theme with a bunch of dogs singing the "Star Wars" theme. The "Imperial March," to be precise.

VW workers win off-hours BlackBerry block

To the horror or relief of workers everywhere, a major company has put the kibosh on after-hours e-mail, at least for some employees.

A Volkswagen union in Germany has struck an agreement with management under which the company's e-mail server will stop sending messages to VW-issued BlackBerrys a half hour after a worker's shift ends, the Financial Times reported this past week. The e-mail cessation will end a half hour before the employee's next shift. Workers can still make phone calls off hours.

The deal affects about 1,000 employees, the Financial Times reported. It's not … Read more

2011 Frankfurt auto show: VW Up!

Forget the modern Beetle, this VW is much more like the original.

The modern Beetle, Jetta, Passat, Golf, and Eos are all much more elaborate, heavier, and more expensive cars than what VW built its brand on. The Up keeps the company grounded in its roots, with a simple and efficient platform that will support a huge array of variants. It's not unlike the original Beetle platform going into everything from dune buggies to a microbus.

Volkswagen's sleek new CC

LOS ANGELES--The 2013 model gets an updated front end and new navigation systems.

The notion of a four-door coupe may seem like the product of a fevered marketer's imagination, but Volkswagen's CC is still one good-looking car. The CC stands for Comfort Coupe, a designation derived from the frameless doors and the low roof that curves gracefully back over the trunk.

Volkswagen showed off the 2013 version of the CC here at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the car's first redesign since its launch. Notably, it gets a new front end patterned after those of the new … Read more

VW, Audi product planners think big, not small, for U.S.

While their competitors add compacts, hybrids, and electric cars, Volkswagen and Audi are pursuing a different product strategy in the United States.

Both VW Group brands want the volume and higher profits that go with larger vehicles.

VW just launched the Passat sedan designed for the United States and built at its new Chattanooga, Tenn., factory. The U.S. Passat is larger though less expensive than the version sold in Europe.

VW executives have talked about selling a small car like the European Polo in the United States. But for now they are focusing on the Passat and two other … Read more
