ViewSonic debuts V350 smartphone

BARCELONA, Spain--Though we've seen enough new smartphones from Mobile World Congress to last us a while (or at least until next month's CTIA), we used the last day of the show to check out what ViewSonic and its trio of parrots had to offer.

The company that has brought us so many displays is making a further push into the mobile space after debuting its ViewPad 4 last month at CES. Though the ViewPad 4 blurred the distinction between phone and tablet, the company's new device in Barcelona is firmly in the smartphone camp.

ViewSonic announces ViewPad 4, promises Gingerbread

ViewSonic Europe is in Barcelona this week where it's showing off the latest addition to its ViewPad family.

Joining its 7-inch and 10-inch siblings, the 4.1-inch ViewPad 4 is expected to be on the short list of Android devices running Android 2.3 Gingerbread when it debuts. Currently listed on ViewSonic's Web site as having Android 2.2, the hardware-maker promises an update to Gingerbread in the near future, and says it will demonstrate the device to key partners with Gingerbread in April.

3D cameras and camcorders: The first wave

Up until 2010, there were nearly no off-the-shelf cameras for consumers to create digital 3D photos and movies; it was pretty much a hobbyist or professional thing to do. But with people hungry for content to view on their 3D-enabled TVs or computers, manufacturers started trickling out cameras and camcorders this year that just about anyone can use for shooting 3D.

The cameras don't all create 3D in the same way, though. Panasonic, for example, is currently relying on add-on lenses that feed stereo images to a single sensor. Fujifilm, DXG, and others, however, are using dual lenses and sensors, which is the more traditional way--and some might argue the best way--of creating stereoscopic images.

Sony skips both of these methods by using a single lens and high-speed shooting and processing to simultaneously capture left and right images that are stitched together in camera. (I expect the remaining manufacturers that don't have 3D cameras to go this last route, as it's likely the least expensive option to implement.)

Plus, there's software to take the 2D content you already have and convert it to 3D, which saves you the trouble of buying a new camera or camcorder altogether. (You could always go back to film or DIY, too.)… Read more

ViewSonic intros monitor with 1ms response time

I've been playing video games most of my life and I've been reviewing monitor for a few years now, but  I still have trouble noticing a difference between a 2ms response time and a 5ms response time when gaming. Actually, to be honest, I do not see a difference, which is not surprising given recent findings.
