Antipirates attacked for pirating NFL game

When the happily married have affairs, they tend to argue it didn't mean anything. When the happily connected are accused of piracy, they claim someone else must have used their Wi-Fi.

Somewhere in the midst of arguments like these lies a concealed truth: human beings are not what they claim to be.

Please, therefore, consider the troubling--and very human--emotions that surround the revelations that, at a Sundance party hosted by VEVO, there played on several screens an illegal stream of an NFL playoff game.

It so happened that a very nice man from TechCrunch was there, and he was … Read more

Facebook in talks to replace YouTube as Vevo's host

Facebook has held talks with Vevo about moving the music-video service away from YouTube and over to the social network's platform, sources with knowledge of the talks told CNET.

While the sources said the discussions are very preliminary and noted that there's still another year remaining on Vevo's contract with YouTube, meetings have occurred between Vevo and Facebook at least twice. The most recent talks took place within the past two weeks, the sources said.

Facebook is interested in a similar arrangement to the one Vevo has now with Google's YouTube. Facebook would stream Vevo's … Read more

Vevo, MTV hook up again for music videos

Vevo, the 2-year-old online music video service, will once again make its clips available on MTV.com and other MTV-owned sites, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

Often called the digital age's MTV, Vevo is home to videos from three of the top four record labels: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and EMI Music. More than a year ago, Vevo pulled its content off MTV's sites following a licensing dispute, but the sides have now renewed their deal and should make an announcement soon, the sources said.

MTV in talks to license Vevo videos

MTV, the entertainment powerhouse that was once synonymous with music videos, may soon end a feud with Vevo, the Web music video company supported by three of the top four record companies.

Sources close to the negotiations told CNET today that the two companies are in talks on a deal that would give MTV's online properties access to Vevo's music videos and the two sides are nearing a final agreement. Music videos are some of the most watched content online.

Vevo's content comes from Universal Music Group, EMI, and Sony Music Entertainment.

Last year, Universal Music, the … Read more

Vevo in, Netflix out on iOS 4.3 AirPlay update

Starting March 11, when iOS 4.3 launches, users will be able to stream content from third-party apps on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to an Apple TV. But so far, the scope of support for the functionality is very much up in the air.

Music-video site Vevo is one of the few companies to acknowledge that it's ready to take advantage of the new AirPlay functionality. The company added support for the feature on Wednesday to its iPad and iPhone apps.

But unlike Vevo, Netflix doesn't see the benefit of adding support for Apple's new … Read more

Vevo plus Google TV: It's what MTV used to be

Remember the good old days when MTV was all about music videos and shows that were actually about music? Sadly, reality television has put an end to all that, but if you use Google TV, you can now reclaim that experience with a little help from Vevo.

Just prior to the CTIA Fall 2010 show, Vevo announced an enhanced user interface for the Google TV platform. So rather than simply searching for music videos through the onscreen browser, Vevo will deliver a customized wrapper designed to mimic the classic cable TV surfing experience, right down to working with the directional … Read more

Music coming to Google TV

I'm not convinced Google TV will be any different from the many other failed attempts to bridge the Internet and television--WebTV and its various Microsoft offshoots, AOLTV, and the first iteration of Apple TV all come to mind. (Although the new Apple TV might be at the right price point to make a go of it.)

Google's emphasis on apps might sway some skeptics, but for the masses, it really comes down to entertainment content. Before I'll pay for some mysterious box that attaches to my TV--much less buy a brand new Internet TV--it needs to … Read more

Vevo launches music video iPhone app

When Vevo launched in December, I wasn't very impressed. I wondered why the site needed to exist when it was mainly serving as a distribution point for the ever-popular YouTube.

Despite my skepticism, it has quickly become one of the most popular video properties in the United States, thanks to its large store of exclusive content. And artists and copyright owners, at least, are getting some money when their videos are distributed through Vevo, which often wasn't the case before.

Vevo on Wednesday launched its free iPhone app, which gives iPhone and iPod Touch users access to 20,… Read more
