Bizarre neck contraption lets you sleep upright

The Ostrich Pillow personal nap tunnel already gave plenty of people the heebie-jeebies. Now, there's something even stranger invading the napping-accessories market. The UpRight Sleeper is a modified neck brace that holds your head in place so you can snooze while sitting.

The contraption is adjustable so it can sit under your chin or go up around your forehead. It moves around to accommodate different head shapes and sizes. A back strap is trapped between your back and your seat to keep everything in place.… Read more

Painter robot turns your sleep into 'art'

Last time I stayed at an Ibis hotel, I had a good experience. Quick service, decent decor, and a great location in central Busan, South Korea. Sadly, it lacked a robot.

The international chain is making up for this shortcoming by offering something no guest can do without: a robot that paints your sleep patterns.

In a decidedly wacky PR stunt being held in Paris, Berlin, and London, Ibis commissioned a robot arm to turn select guests' sleep data into painted canvases.

The Sleep Art project involves an ABB industrial robot and a special mattress equipped with 80 sensors. … Read more

Get a Magellan GPS with lifetime maps and traffic for $84.99

When it comes to behind-the-wheel navigation, I still prefer a dedicated GPS to a smartphone app (especially "smart" ones like the new Apple Maps -- just saying).

Of course, I'm a little spoiled now: I want a big screen, real-time traffic data, and all the map updates I can eat.

Ta-daaa: Today only, and while supplies last, Tech Woot has the Magellan 3065T-LM 4.7-inch GPS with lifetime maps and traffic for $84.99, plus $5 for shipping. Elsewhere it sells for $30 to $40 more.

Unlike a lot of the discount navigators I see these days, … Read more

Get a Lenovo IdeaPad 14-inch ultrabook for $649

Here's what I've learned recently: My 11.6-inch HP Pavilion dm1z is too small. My 18.4-inch Acer Aspire is too big. I need a laptop that's right in the middle, one that's slim and light enough to be portable, but large and powerful enough to handle my daily workload.

I think I've found it. For a limited time, you can get the Lenovo IdeaPad U410 ultrabook in sapphire blue for $649 shipped (plus sales tax where applicable). That's after applying coupon code USPU42F1011 at checkout. It normally sells for $969.

Why the steep … Read more

Get an HP Envy 15.6-inch ultra-thin laptop for $399.99

I know a lot of deals sold out quickly this week, but there were plenty of "evergreen" goodies that are still available, including the name-your-own-price e-book bundle, free 15GB cloud-storage account, and $20 Skype credit with one-month Netflix trial.

Oh, and don't forget the awesome freebie for trick-or-treaters.

I mention all that as a preface to today's deal, which has an equally high sellout risk as yesterday's gone-in-a-flash laptop: Today only, and while supplies last, 1SaleADay has the HP ENVY 6-1014NR 15.6-inch ultra-slim laptop for $399.99, plus $4.99 for shipping. It's … Read more

Get a 15.6-inch Asus laptop for $249.99 shipped

You'll forgive a little nepotism, right? I think so, once you get a load of this deal.

While supplies last, CNET Marketplace has the Asus X54L-BBK2 15.6-inch laptop for $249.99 shipped (plus sales tax where applicable) when you use coupon code CNETSALE. Amazingly, it's new, not refurbished.

Note: The code is not working at the moment. I'm looking into it. Stay tuned.

Update No. 2: Code is fixed! Deal should be back up momentarily.

It's also more than up to the task of handling everyday computing. The X54L-BBK2 features an AMD A4-3305M processor, which … Read more

Get a Powerlink travel router for $19.99

Do you travel a lot? If so, you've probably encountered hotels that have weak or non-existent Wi-Fi, or that charge extra for it while offering Ethernet-based connectivity for free.

A good travel router can save the day, turning that laptop-only Ethernet connection into a Wi-Fi hot spot for all. For a limited time, and while supplies last, Mwave has the Powerlink PT-AP2403 mini travel router for $19.99 shipped. It sells elsewhere for as much as $35.

Update: Aaaand...sold out. Sigh. But it's worth checking back later in the day in case Mwave releases more inventory. Trying … Read more

Top third-party public transit apps for iOS

By now most everyone knows about Apple's deficient Maps app in iOS 6 -- particularly those who counted on the former Google-powered app for public transit directions. Apple CEO Tim Cook publically apologized for the Maps app and said the company is working to make the app better. But in the meantime, if you need public transit directions, you're going to have to rely on third-party apps from the App Store.

Before you start sifting through hundreds of transit apps, I put together this collection so you can get the help you need right away. It's important … Read more

iPhone 5 vs. the VPI Traveler turntable

Face it, most of today's shiny new gizmos will be hopelessly out-of-date in a few years and taking up space in landfills not so long after that. The iPhone 5 may be a marvel of engineering and marketing genius, but like iPhones of years past it's doomed to be cast aside when legions of Apple fanboys and girls stand in line to buy the iPhone 6 sometime next year. And so it goes.

Four years ago I wrote about my friend Gene and his Linn LP 12 turntable, the one he bought 30 years earlier.… Read more
