Microsoft playing active role in ultrabook development?

It's a software maker first and foremost, but Microsoft certainly has a vested interest in hardware.

Case in point: Digitimes is reporting today, citing sources, that Microsoft is "actively involved" in ultrabook product designs. The reason the company is taking such an active role centers on Windows 8's touch-enabled features. When displays are touched in traditional clamshell notebooks, the screens will shake and move a bit, making it difficult to handle tasks. Microsoft has now placed more stringent specifications on vendors, according to Digitimes' sources, to ensure that the touch screens will deliver a more reliable … Read more

Apple exploring haptic touch technology for future iPhones, iPads

Many of the last remaining BlackBerry holdouts continue to clamor about the advantages of a physical keyboard, citing the difficulty of using a touch-screen device if its user cannot see the display. According to one of Apple's latest patent applications, that argument may soon become moot.

The "Touch-based User Interface with Haptic Feedback" patent application, discovered by AppleInsider, highlights the use of actuators and sensors on an iPad's or iPhone's display that would allow a user to effectively feel buttons and other controls.

Apple's take on haptic technology places piezoelectric actuators under the display, … Read more

Maingear aims for a premium all-in-one with the new Solo 21

All-in-one computers (such as the Apple iMac) are the most visible part of the desktop market these days, thanks to excellent screen/PC hybrids from HP, Lenovo, and others. But these are largely mainstream machines, aimed at kiosk-like kitchen environments, or family video viewing.

Boutique PC maker Maingear is adding a different take, with its new Solo 21 all-in-one, which focuses on high-end multimedia. The company says: … Read more

Laptop buyers: Should you wait for Windows 8?

When should you buy a laptop? That's always a very difficult question--buy too soon after new technology hits, and you miss out on refinements and price drops. On the other hand, you certainly don't want to spend upwards of $1,000 on a device that feels outdated just months later. It's an even more difficult decision in the wake of Microsoft's look at Windows 8 in Barcelona, Spain.

For Mac users, the decision's generally simple: wait for the new version, and buy, buy, buy. MacBooks, like iPhones and iPads, only come in so many versions, and they rarely drop in price anywhere.

Windows PCs? Well, that's another story. … Read more

Windows 8 and Android Jelly Bean: To wait or not to wait?

Windows 8 is hoping to merge tablet touch screens into our desktops, laptops and whatever hybrid devices we might be using a year from now. Meanwhile, Google is allegedly already at work on Android 5.0 Jelly Bean and is looking to further integrate its mobile OS with Windows 8. It's a lot to look forward to, but where does that leave us for the rest of 2012?

In my case, my old Windows laptop is on its last legs--as is my much-abused Android phone. It's time to buy new hardware, but unfortunately we're stuck in an awkward in-between time for both operating systems and hardware.

Last month at CES in Las Vegas, I had a chance to play with the perhaps too cleverly named Yoga from Lenovo--it's a laptop with a keyboard and touch screen. The keyboard folds all the way around nearly 360 degrees to transform into a de facto tablet.

With the Yoga in my hand, a single thought repeated itself in my head--so, this is what Windows 8 is meant for!… Read more

African Bullfrog owns Ant Crusher

Impressed by a bearded dragon playing Ant Crusher? Check out how intense an African Bullfrog gets during the game.

As the ants climb down the touch screen, it becomes quickly obvious that the tired phrase "there's an app for that" is now becoming relevant to keeping exotic amphibian pets entertained. After successfully lunging and darting its tongue at the Android smartphone, the frog easily passes to the next level. … Read more

EXOdesk: Like Microsoft Surface, but lots cheaper

The next-generation Microsoft Surface is now available for preorder. If the $8,400 price tag is a little much to spend for your personal use, you might want to wait for the EXOdesk to appear next year.

The EXOdesk is 40 inches of interactivity designed to sit right in front of your regular computer monitor. It's an extension of the touch-screen user interface work done by EXOPC for slate-style devices running Windows 7.

EXOPC already offers a selection of touch apps optimized for its devices through the EXOstore. The EXOdesk appears to be a much larger interface for using those apps.

The below teaser video ahead of an appearance at CES next year shows the EXOdesk in action. A user opens apps, moves them around, and turns all 40 inches into a virtual piano for the finale.… Read more

An early, first look at Windows 8 (hands-on)

Not unlike an artfully created but tiny-portioned appetizer leading into a flavorful and filling main course that remains stuck in the kitchen, my first hands-on experience with Windows 8 left me eager for what was coming but disappointed with what was set in front of me.

Microsoft lent out Windows 8 tablets to attendees at the end of the Build conference preview yesterday, surprisingly running an earlier version of the in-development operating system than the one that had been demonstrated as functional earlier in the day.

The operating system represents a major change for the company and its fans, as … Read more

How to make a free iPad stylus

I've known for years that there are special pens that can be used with capacitive touch screens, like the ones used on the iPad or any modern tablet or smartphone. Still, I've never bought one. It's not that they're too expensive (some are as cheap as $5), it's just that my curiosity doesn't match the level of patience required to order one online and wait a few days for it to show up.

So when I read iLearn Technology's tutorial on making your own capacitive stylus using common office supplies, I had to … Read more
