Asus says Netbooks can be upscale with the S121

Asus is still chasing the "upscale Netbook" market with its latest shiny little box, the S121. Rather than being part of the well-known Eee PC line, the S121 is being called an "Ultra Slim Mobile Notebook," and uses Intel's Atom-based Menlow platform--essentially an updated version of the Atom CPU currently used in most Netbooks.

To fancy it up, Asus is including a 128GB solid-state hard drive, Swarovski crystals in the display hinge, and a leather palm rest. The whole thing is a bit less than one inch thick and weighs a modest 2.6 pounds, … Read more

Swarovski disease infects Bluetooth

The "Swarovski disease"--as former Crave master Mike Yamamoto dubbed the jewelry company's tendency to bedazzle every gadget the tech world holds dear--has struck us right in the ear.

But with several hands-free laws on the book, it was only a matter of time before more blinging Bluetooth headsets made it to market.

In a way, it makes more sense to have a Swarovski-crystal-covered Bluetooth headset than to have other gadgets dripping in Swarovski. Since the device is hung on the ear, it may be mistaken for a giant piece of jewelry.

The company says its Breeze Black Bluetooth 2.0 headsetRead more

Philips may be hanging with the wrong crowd

Et tu, Philips? Please say it ain't so. Despite all the madness that is the world of gadgetry, the Dutch company has almost always managed to keep above the fray and stay true to its aesthetic sensibilities. Sure, it has lapsed into the bling thing on occasion, but it always seemed to come back to its tasteful origins.

Now we're not so sure. The names alone of its new USB drives--"Robot Naughty Raymond" and "Happy Laura"--are disturbingly out of character, not to mention a jarring departure from the sleek designs that have … Read more

Swarovski tarts up a new HDTV

We've already seen the Crystallized Loewe Individual and the ultra-bling Philips Diamond TV, and now it's LG's turn to join forces with the Swarovski empire with its Canvas Crystal X HDTV. A pretty clever one, too, which weds last year's Design Art-series chassis with 1,000 of the glittery crystals. It would have been even better if the company had extended this special treatment to its Scarlet lineup, though we have had equal reservations on the level of unnecessary extravagance.

Whatever it is, this 47-incher is already out in South Korea and costs a dear $3,194Read more

Another Swarovski victim is in the bag

What would go impractically well with a $350 Dunhill USB drive? A Swarovski-studded laptop bag, of course. Port Designs has made one to order in the name of "Paris," a crystal-trimmed case in a sleek black design for laptops up to 15.4 inches. It even has a matching heart charm, Chip Chick says, in case you don't have enough rhinestones in your life. As saddened as we are to see another Swarovski-infected product on the market, we're somewhat heartened that its designers exercised some restraint, unlike other items we've seen. One must take … Read more

The first conceited cable connector

Of all the ridiculous venues for Swarovski crystals--trust us, there are far more than we'd care to count--this has to rank among the silliest. And that's saying a lot.

Why anyone would want crystals on a cable connector is beyond us, but that's exactly what Neutrik has created with its "CrystalCON" plug. It's apparently a more fashionable version of its ugly-duckling XLR connector sibling, according to BornRich, though both probably work just the same.

Still, it's worth pointing out for the product literature alone, which describes it as a "fancy, noble, valuable, … Read more

For this coffee maker, the crystals aren't sugar

If we were to ever give it much thought, we probably would have ventured to guess that coffee makers and Swarovski crystals probably wouldn't make a great combination. But that's what happens when one works for Crave: The irrational exuberance of some gadget makers forces the most unthinkable thoughts to the surface.

Indeed, the mere sight of the hideous "Nespresso Crystal Coffee Machine" from the U.K.'s infamous Goldstriker is enough to cause temporary blindness, but the $4,000 price tag will afflict the digestive system too. There is some amusement to be had, however, … Read more

Popping the question with USB rings

Listen up, incurable romantics of questionable taste. If you're looking for a geeky way to pop the question but can't afford a crystal-laden iPod Touch, a cheaper alternative may be near.

This "Swarovski Crystal Engagement Ring" is a concept for a USB flash drive designed to store photos, poems, credit card receipts, and other artifacts of your love, Gizmodiva says. These digital mementos are meant to be shared when the rings are joined in holy matrimony. And if this every makes it to production, it'll serve another purpose: Once presented with the gift, it would … Read more

Pimp your Wii for $4,000

If you're looking considering a new look for your precious Nintendo Wii, would you rather give it a G-mask makeover (stick-on overlay) or one of these bling jobs with 20,000 Swarovski crystals? For a mere $4,000, Crystal Icing is offering its "The Brawl To End Them All" series crystallized Wii, according to BornRich. There is a choice of Mario himself or his arch nemesis Bowser to take home. Both are brought to life against a contrasting white-and-blue background, complete with the highly sought-after in-game, Invincibility Star.

Ruin your MacBook Air for $39,700

Wow. If you though the customized MacBook Air from aptly named "Crystal Icing" molested the laptop's ultra-clean design, check out this number.

Dubbed "Golden Age," this custom Air has no fewer than 12,000 Swarovski crystals that are "specially coated with 24k gold from underneath so that the transparent crystals can reflect the true gold color," according to Pocket-lint. Classy. Designed by an outfit called "Bling My Thing"--we kid you not--it supposedly was inspired by a traditional Japanese pattern.

The best thing about it is its exclusivity, as only 20 … Read more
