BlackBerry service recovering after meltdown--as are CrackBerry addicts

Oh boy, we've got a BlackBerry down, many BlackBerrys down, in fact. Last night, Research In Motion experienced a widespread system failure that interrupted e-mail delivery to all BlackBerrys in North America. According to the company, the root cause of the meltdown is still under review, but the network is back up and running. Unfortunately, message delivery seems to be due to the backlog of e-mail in the system.

Check out CNET News.com's story for more details, and please feel free to exercise your BlackBerry thumbs to share your stories and gripes with us.

Dell: Goodbye PDAs, hello smart phones?

Well, well, isn't this interesting? There's a report out of DigiTimes that Quanta Computer, a Taiwanese-based laptop and hardware manufacturer, is working on a "PDA handset" for Dell with an expected launch date of Q4 2007. Code named Fly, the project is reported to be a Windows Mobile 6 smart phone that will feature a QWERTY keyboard and HSDPA support. The news comes a week after Dell announced it would be discontinuing its Axim line of PDAs. The move would make sense; smart phone sales continue to climb and overshadow standalone PDAs. Plus, let's not … Read more

Turn your phone into a projector

So you like the idea of watching TV or movies on your MP4 player or cell phone, but the screens are just too small for you to make an accurate call on instant replay, especially if your next paycheck is on the line with the game's outcome. All that could change with new technology from Microvision, which claims to have built the world's smallest projector.

The company's Pico Projector, which is planned for release at this week's Consumer Electronics Show, is designed to be embedded in handheld products to project "photos, videos, movies and TV … Read more

Power multiple gadgets from multiple sources

Now that smoking is out and gadgets are in, the car lighter has evolved into a different kind of lifeline. But what if you don't have a car?

The TripleCharger can power mobile phones, PDAs, personal media devices and portable gaming consoles from a car, wall outlet or batteries. You do need a converter head for each type of device you want it to charge. There is a small USB connector for an iPod or DS Lite, for example, and other heads for various phone models, but they are not that pricey.

The TripleCharger Bundle from ElectronicMetro for $20 … Read more

A wireless recharging pad

This sounds almost too good to be true: a wireless technology that can be used to charge all devices simultaneously, regardless of type or brand. Yet that's what a company called WildCharge claims to do with its new product.

All you need to do is lay your cell phone, PDA or other device on or near its "WildCharger," a flexible roll-up pad with a power adapter attached to one edge. The devices, which can even include laptops, then absorb their electrical charge wirelessly, the company says.

Pricing for the WildCharger, which is slated for debut at CES … Read more

Shocking: Palm's secret product still a secret

Way back in March, Palm cofounder Jeff Hawkins alluded to the fact that he was working on a mysterious third product category for the company, but we really haven't heard much about it since. (And frankly, that's quite a feat given Palm's horrible record of keeping its product announcements a secret, but I digress.) However, yesterday, a former vice president of product planning at Palm, Michael Mace, asked Palm CEO Ed Colligan if the project was still a go, and though he was quick to move on to the next question, Colligan said yes. You can read … Read more

Bluetooth keyboard-stand combo works

We never quite understood the need for roll-up keyboards, especially those constructed to withstand post-apocalyptic conditions. For the most part, they just seemed more trouble than they were worth.

But there's something about this fabric keyboard from Just Mobile RoKy that struck us as different. It was this photo on Mobility Site that sold us: The keyboard's Bluetooth connection and accompanying universal stand for a smart phone or PDA make a lot of sense. Plus, the simple carrying case affixed to the end presumably would help keep the thing from unfurling in your pocket and onto the floor. … Read more

Find a designer suit via GPS

It happens to us all the time too: Jet over to Paris or Milan for a shopping weekend, and you have no idea where to start. Well fear not, for help is on the way.

Mio, maker of pocket PC and GPS devices, has a new personal travel assistant that comes preinstalled with "vital shopping data" such as size conversions and foreign measurements, as well as an MP3 player, games and the necessary satellite guidance to satisfy all your designer needs. The Mio H610, which has a 2.7-inch touch screen, also has three interchangeable covers and sells … Read more

Solar device for the geographically challenged

We have a terrible sense of direction. It's so bad that we're willing to buy and carry any manner or number of devices that can keep us from accidentally ending up in Sopranos territory, including this one.

Proporta is probably best known for its gadget accessories (and accessorizing) but, as The Gadget Blog points out, also offers some technology of its own. The latest example is a solar-powered GPS receiver that can send wireless signals to your smart phone or PDA and "poinpoint your exactly location anywhere in the world."

Now we just have to make … Read more

Found: A good use for the Nokia Tablet

OK, I know I may be in the minority here (check out these user opinions), but I'm not a fan of the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. Yes, it's portable; yes, it lets you surf the Web. I also realize it's not meant to be a PDA or a laptop replacement, but I just keep asking myself, "Why? Why would I want this thing?"

But wait, before you pour on the hate mail, let me just say, I may be changing my tune--just maybe.

Navicore has released a solution, simply called the Nokia Navigation Kit, that … Read more
