MTV and the 'day' the music died

Launched on August 1, 1981, with the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," MTV had a huge impact on 1980s pop culture.

Before MTV arrived, music programming was mostly limited to bands playing a song or two on the late-night talk shows or "Saturday Night Live." Amazingly enough, most big cities' cable providers weren't on board for the MTV launch; NYC and LA didn't offer the network until 1982. MTV's "I want my MTV!" ad campaigns helped rectify the situation, but MTV's initial rise was painfully slow. The network went … Read more

Vevo, MTV hook up again for music videos

Vevo, the 2-year-old online music video service, will once again make its clips available on MTV.com and other MTV-owned sites, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

Often called the digital age's MTV, Vevo is home to videos from three of the top four record labels: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and EMI Music. More than a year ago, Vevo pulled its content off MTV's sites following a licensing dispute, but the sides have now renewed their deal and should make an announcement soon, the sources said.

MTV in talks to license Vevo videos

MTV, the entertainment powerhouse that was once synonymous with music videos, may soon end a feud with Vevo, the Web music video company supported by three of the top four record companies.

Sources close to the negotiations told CNET today that the two companies are in talks on a deal that would give MTV's online properties access to Vevo's music videos and the two sides are nearing a final agreement. Music videos are some of the most watched content online.

Vevo's content comes from Universal Music Group, EMI, and Sony Music Entertainment.

Last year, Universal Music, the … Read more

So long, and thanks for all the music

As you may have noted from my final Crave podcast yesterday, it is ever-so-unlike me to oh, say, create a video playlist completely dedicated to me. (Who, me? Self involved? Never!) But, hey--what can I say? Today is my very last day at CNET, and I wanted to give one final bit of love to the company that helped to sprout me from a wet-behind-the-ears 23-year-old straight out of college into the relatively mature and knowledgeable individual I like to pretend I am today. More importantly, I wanted to take a moment to thank you--the readers--for letting my reviews and … Read more

Vevo plus Google TV: It's what MTV used to be

Remember the good old days when MTV was all about music videos and shows that were actually about music? Sadly, reality television has put an end to all that, but if you use Google TV, you can now reclaim that experience with a little help from Vevo.

Just prior to the CTIA Fall 2010 show, Vevo announced an enhanced user interface for the Google TV platform. So rather than simply searching for music videos through the onscreen browser, Vevo will deliver a customized wrapper designed to mimic the classic cable TV surfing experience, right down to working with the directional … Read more

New in iTunes: The nitty-gritty

Along with a refresh to most of its iPod line, Apple's annual digital media event included a refresh to iTunes. The music and video management software revved to version 10 and is supposed to be available today for both Windows and Mac users. I followed CNET's live coverage of the event as the announcement unfolded, including participating in a chat room loaded with Buzz Out Loud viewers, and the response to the refresh was a pretty much universal "meh."

I can't help but say that I agree with that general consensus. Version 10 of iTunes … Read more

Want a weather report? Watch this music video

If you watch the music video for singer Lissie Maurus' new song "Cuckoo" today, you might see the musicians against a nice sunny backdrop. Or a gray, windy one. It depends where you're watching it from.

The video changes according to live weather conditions. Viewers zoom in on a city or area on an interactive Google world map, and the video backdrop changes according to current local conditions. Pick a different location and the song continues while a humorously mustachioed, bow-tie-wearing TV weatherman kind of guy delivers a new forecast before the video shifts to reflect the … Read more
