Seafaring robot sails through Sandy unscathed

Hurricane Sandy has destroyed houses, cars, and boats, and caused some $20 billion in property damage, but one robot rode out the storm at sea without a scratch, as far as its maker can tell.

Liquid Robotics said one of its Wave Glider marine robots named Mercury was 100 miles east of Toms River, N.J., when Sandy hit, but the machine continued to function.

It withstood winds of up to 70 knots and continued to transmit real-time weather data about the storm. … Read more

Liquid physics games for iOS

I often write about action games in my collections, and it's no secret I'm a fan of the racing-game genre as well. But another genre I like to play while on my commute is mind-twisting puzzle games. A new game was released a few days ago that has jumped to the top of the charts at iTunes App Store and it has all the bells and whistles to remain a hit.

Though puzzle games come in a lot of different forms, one of my favorite types is those that use realistic physics. Some of the best I have come across use liquid physics and require you to experiment in order to solve each puzzle.… Read more

Plastic shades seem so passe, compared to Gucci's new liquid wood sunglasses.

The Italian high-end fashion giant worked with sunglasses manufacturer Safilo to create the "green" glasses, which sport a frame made of material never used before in production eyewear: liquid wood, a renewable plastic of sorts that actually consists of biodegradable wood fiber, resins, and the polymer lignin. … Read more

Next iPhone said to ditch glass for Liquidmetal, arrive in June

After a brief hiatus, the long-standing rumor that Apple will employ more metal in the iPhone, has made a return -- and even taken a new twist.

Citing unnamed industry sources, Korean news site ETnews says Apple will use Liquidmetal technology for the next iPhone, which the outlet boldly claims will be unveiled at Apple's annual worldwide developers conference.

That conference, which has yet to be announced, typically takes place in June. Up until the last year, it has also been ground zero for the unveiling of new iPhones, including Apple's first-generation model.

As for the question of whether Apple would even use such a material, it's been more of when, rather than if.… Read more

Acer reveals sexy Liquid Glow ICS smartphone

If you've been eagerly waiting for a gluttonous helping of Ice Cream Sandwich, prepare to tuck in. The new Acer Liquid Glow smartphone is the latest in what is sure to be a parade of devices running Android 4.0 announced at Mobile World Congress.

While I'm not exactly sure why this phone is called Liquid Glow, Acer does say the gadget is targeted at, "today's fun-seeking, social-networking youth." I suppose that's apparent from the Liquid Glow's three snazzy hues; Sakura Pink, Alpine White, and Cat's Eye Black. Funny, I thought cat's eyes were wildly colored. … Read more

Zero emissions from liquid air

The Dearman Engine Company is developing an engine that runs on what most people would not think of as fuel, liquid air.

Call it a new kind of cold fusion. The pistons get pushed by the pressure of rapidly expanding air in the cylinder. Liquid air is stored at -256 degrees Fahrenheit. The engine pumps liquid air into the cylinder along with what Dearman calls a heat exchange fluid. The liquid air very quickly changes to a gaseous state as it reaches ambient temperature, expanding at the same time.

When the exhaust valves open, the only emission is air.

LCD makers on hook for $553 million in price-fixing settlement

Seven LCD manufacturer including Samsung and Sharp this month agreed to pay $553 million to settle lawsuits that claimed the companies were colluding with one another to fix the prices of their panels for use in consumer electronics.
