Quick Take: LG LV4400 series

When it comes to budget screens with lounge-friendly sizes, LG has got things covered.

The company offers a number of TV between 40 and 50 inches for under a thousand dollars, with the 42LV4400 in particular proving quite popular with CNET readers.

The LV4400 is a LCD series that includes an LED-backlit LCD panel. It features a piano black bezel and a fairly understated look. Features are a little light-on, but if you're looking for a simple TV without all of the gumpf associated with more-expensive models--"smart TV"? That's what a Roku is for! And … Read more

LG TVs 2012: Thin bezels, motion remotes and lots of LEDs

Massive numbers of new 2012 TVs were announced at CES 2012 earlier this month, and digesting them all is easier with a table than umpteen blog posts.

Hewing close to hoary CES tradition of yore, LG was the first major TV maker to hold its CES press conference. The company also gave CNET the most information prior to the show about its TV models (and probably other stuff; don't ask me about LG phones or kimchi refrigerators please). It also took home Best of Show.

You won't find these TVs described in detail on LG's Web site … Read more

LG's eye-poppin' 84-inch 3D ultra-def TV heading to CES

Looks like LG has already given up its TV goodies for CES 2012.

First, it said it's bringing the world's largest (at least for now) 55-inch OLED TV, and now along for the ride is an 84-inch 3D ultra-defiinition 4K TV, another world's largest.

The 3D UDTV has four times the "resolution clarity" of a full HDTV (3,840x2,160 versus 1,920x1,080 pixels), which is nice and it apparently will make LG's 3D experience that much better. The extra resolution won't matter much for consumers right now, though, because you'll … Read more

LG's mammoth 55-inch OLED TV is CES-bound

It's not every day you can claim making the largest of the thinnest TV screens on the planet--which is precisely why LG is drumming up excitement for its 55-inch OLED TV panel at CES 2012.

What's the big deal? The 5-millimeter-thick display is light, pencil-thin, and promises high definition with no after image--that motion-induced blur you may see in an LCD screen. In addition, it boasts a contrast ratio of over 100,000:1.

What's more, LG is setting up a stepped-up pricing war, strongly hinting that its world's-largest OLED display won't cost an arm … Read more

Top 5 TVs of 2011

In 2011, the biggest "breakthrough" may have been that connected TVs finally got a name--Smart TV--but the year also gave us some excellent televisions.

The Pioneer Kuro has remained the standard in picture quality since the last one rolled out of the factory three years ago, but this year it received a challenger: the Sharp Elite Pro. It wasn't even a plasma, but a highly sophisticated LCD, which eclipsed every other TV released this year.

Sharp aside, there were also standout TVs from Samsung and Panasonic, and LG started what could be a significant trend with the release of the first "passive" 3D televisions.

The TVs presented here in order of greatness are the pick of the crop from 2011, and in addition to excellent picture quality also come studded with the features--3D, Smart TV, etc.--demanded of a modern television.… Read more

Photos: LG's 'Scarlet,' the TV with a hole

LG's "Scarlet" range of televisions are causing quite a buzz. Is it the massive marketing campaign? Is it the intrusive red color that the back of the TV is finished in? Could it in fact be the glowing red/white hole on the front of the TV? Whatever it is, people want to know about this TV, so we got LG to send us one, and we've taken some photos of it.

We're looking at the 32-inch model, so it's only a 720p TV, which is fine for most uses, and we suspect that … Read more

LG Scarlet: Irritating marketing campaign

If you've been tramping around the Internet much recently you will almost certainly have seen adverts about a hit new TV show called Scarlet. It turns out that there was no hit show at all, and it was all a big publicity stunt for a new LG TV "series" (meaning range) called Scarlet. There was even a party at some vile, trendy dive in Central London that caused one TV reviewer to launch into what can only be described as a Kermodian rant.

The TV is called Scarlet because it has some distinctive red highlighting, and because '… Read more

LG adds Freeview PVR to LCD

It's hard to criticize Korean companies these days. There was a time when LG and Samsung were famous only for their low-end products, but these days, nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, it seems to be the Korean companies who are innovating and adding new features, and in LG's case, it's only gone and stuffed a Freeview PVR into its new TV, the LG 32LT75.

LG, which has done this before with previous models in the U.S. market, isn't the first company to put a PVR in a TV--Humax first did this a … Read more
