Gadgets are sometimes substitutes for other sorts of stimulus.
So when Jimmy Kimmel spotted the fairly vast, beautifully balanced new Windows tablets in Fox News' new so-called Deck of a newsroom, he was reminded of going where no man has gone before, into a stratosphere of exactitude, where truth defeats all.
Um, no. I might have got my analogies in a twist there.
What he actually said was: "It looks like what happens when a guy gets divorced and then goes nuts at Best Buy."… Read more
Shrill leftish types like to paint Fox News as a fundamentalist organization, there to stuff one shade of news into the gullet of a compliant viewer.
This view is, frankly, unbalanced.
Fox News is a driven, modern business that regularly beats its competitors and scales heights to which, for example, CNN aspires.
As proof of this might I offer its new, gizmo-filled newsroom, called "The Deck." This isn't something from "Minority Report." It's a technological laboratory for major reporting.… Read more

A New York judge has decided not to issue a preliminary injunction against Dish's Hopper, allowing the ad-skipping digital video recording device to remain legal in the state.
The ruling, released Wednesday by US District Judge Laura Swain, denied ABC's request for the injunction, which would have put a temporary hold on the sale of the devices.
This is another win for Dish, which has been embroiled in multiple lawsuits with broadcast companies over its ad-skipping technology called AutoHop. In addition to ABC, CBS (the parent company of CNET), and other companies have filed separate suits against Dish … Read more
I tend to live my life mostly in confusion.
The more I understand people, the less I understand, people.
So please could you all help me out just this once?
I am possessed by a Fox Business headline that reads: "Twitter Confirms IPO -- Or Maybe Not."
Can you see the source of my confusion? Well, if I understand the article (or not) Twitter spokeswoman Carolyn Penner replied to a Fox Business inquiry about a potential IPO with the words: "..."… Read more
Spotify has hired one of Rupert Murdoch's execs to spearhead its attempt to break away from the start-up pack and give bigger rivals like Pandora or iTunes a run for their money.
Jorge Espinel, previously the head of 21st Century Fox and News Corp.'s digital strategy, is now in charge of global business development at Spotify. Spotify confirmed the hire to CNET, and Espinel listed the job on his LinkedIn profile Thursday.
For all its success elbowing to the front of a pack of streaming music start-ups, Spotify far lags the numbers put up by Pandora, Sirius XM … Read more
Today, traces of the former tenant are still visible. But aside from the occasional Sun sign or logo, much of the campus' look and feel has been completely reimagined. Gone are the warrens of cubicles. Instead, Facebook has opted for clusters of desks to foster collaboration. The adequate, but rather ordinary, Sun Micro cafeteria has been replaced with Philz Coffee, the Burger Shack, and … Read more
A federal appeals court Friday denied broadcaster 21st Century Fox's appeal to make Dish Network Corp.'s Hopper ad-skipping service temporarily unavailable to consumers.
At the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth District, a panel of the court denied Fox's request for an "en banc" rehearing, which means the entire bench of the Ninth Circuit court would rehear the case rather than the smaller panel. It also rejected another panel rehearing.
According to the opinion, the judges involved voted against the rehearing because the lower Los Angeles court's decision appropriately determined Fox failed … Read more
Explore the outer reaches of the universe in a new trailer for "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" -- an upcoming space and science spectacular hosted by popular astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Arriving on Fox and National Geographic channels in spring 2014 as part of a 13-episode series, "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" builds off Carl Sagan's groundbreaking series of a similar name (subtitled "A Personal Voyage") seen on PBS more than 30 years ago.
The trailer indicates that Fox spared little expense on the effort, as there's an extraordinary amount of high-end special effects and animation seen throughout the tease. In many scenes, deGrasse Tyson appears to control a sexy spaceship that drops in and out of spectacular stars.
There's a lot of geek cred behind the refreshed "Cosmos," as Sagan's widow Ann Druyan, who played a major role in the production of the original series, serves as an executive producer and writer for the new episodes. Astronomer and original writer Steven Soter makes a return, too.… Read more
